The group Pali and Danny Couch both use the same sound
engineer Mr. Pierre Grill. Pali wrote to tell
me it seems as if one
night very late at the studio Pierre
brought them into my site and they have been frequent visitors since. Pretty
special huh? Pali said to me about Fanaddicts "what an awesome, awesome site!!!." I'm
truly flattered and honored!

ISLAND SOUNDS
Pianist creates mood music, Hawaiian style
By
Wayne Harada
Hot
for Hawaiian love songs for those quiet evenings of romance?
"KE ALOHA" by Pierre Grill; RVR Records

• Genre: Piano solos of Hawaiian love songs.
• Distinguishing notes: Frenchman Pierre Grill, a long-time Hawai'i resident and recording industry beacon, brings a tender touch to 14 Island songs of varying vintages, each one like a pearl on a necklace. Grill, normally an engineer for a host of local recording projects, periodically takes a front-and-center bow; this is his second solo piano endeavor and his relaxed, classicist stature brings quiet dignity and beaucoup amour to the limelight. His roster of favorites include hits such as "E Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u," "E Ku'u Morning Dew," "Pua 'Olena" and "Hawaiian Lullaby," and oldies such as "E Ku'u Sweetie, "Pua Lili Lehua," "Pua Carnation" and "Ho'onanea." The simple arrangements bring out the solitude and warmth of a romantic moment in time; Grill's piano stylings are just the thing for a cozy evening of calm and cuddling.

Pierre Grill approaches familiar Hawaiian melodies from an unusual perspective with his second album of solo acoustic piano stylings. He cuts no corners with his choice of keyboards, using a 9-foot Bösendorfer on some selections and a 6-foot, 4-inch Pleyet on the others. Nothing electronic here! Pierre Grill, left, congratulated Danny Kaleikini
Grill's beautiful arrangements get inside familiar tunes, taking them through uncharted territory, before returning to the recognizable melodic signatures of "E Ku'u Morning Dew," "Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u" and "Pua 'Olena." They evoke the links between Hawaiian music and the Western classical traditions that go back well more than a century. The songs also provide a soothing musical antidote to the stress of modern life.
THE ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT: Keith & Carmen Haugen usually promote their own recordings between sets at the Pacific Beach Hotel, but Keith is so impressed with Pierre Grill's new album, "Ke Aloha: Hawaiian Love Songs," that he is playing it during the duo's breaks instead...Pierre Grill: Hawai'i based Award winning producer of local talents, is not new to the Instrumental Music world. With Brad White on Pan flute and various wood winds, they have released on Sugo Records four very successful instrumental albums Voyage, Isle of Dreams, Winter's Journey, First Light.

Pua Lili
(Pierre Grill)
RVR Records the release of Pua Lilia, the debut recording
by Pierre Grill, noted Hawaii producer and recording engineer. Pierre moved to
Hawai`i from Marseille, France 22 years ago and since then has produced many
successful local artists at Rendez-Vous Recording, his studio tucked away in
Manoa Valley. With his training in classical music and jazz, and his love for
the Islands, Pierre turned his attention to Hawai`i's music and recently made
time to sit down at his piano and complete this beautiful recording of 13
favorite Hawaiian melodies. The last selection, "Hawai`i Aloha," features the
Luna String Quartet, made up of students from Punahou School. The attractive
packaging makes the album perfect for gift-giving. This CD featuring some of the
islands' most beloved Hawaiian songs.

- The beautifully composed "Whale Cry of the
Ocean" CD was the recipient of the 1999 Hawaii Music Award for the Best New Age
Album, with the accolades going to Hawaii pianist Pierre Grill and violinist
Lisa Leung -- and some endangered humpback whales of the North Pacific.
Authentic Pacific Humpback Whale Songs recorded by the Pacific Whale Foundation
(Maui) are backed by original arrangements, compositions and improvisations."The
whale is the featured performer, just like any singer," reads the liner notes of
"Whale Cry of the Ocean". Throughout the CD, the haunting, unforgettable songs
of humpback whales are mixed with richly textured piano, synthesizer and violin
compositions, giving the whale songs added dimension and emotion.
"Gypsy Song" mixes a traditional Rom (Gypsy) tune with what sounds like a
longing tone in a humpback whale's song. Grill and Leung say that the gypsy tune
was fitting accompaniment for a migrating humpback whale, an ocean wayfarer
recorded in the Whitsunday Islands of Australia. "Chimes" builds on a simple
theme provided by a whale, which is echoed in handpicked piano strings.
The sounds of the whales were recorded by the Pacific Whale Foundation in
Hawaii, Australia and Alaska. They include the plaintive songs of males seeking
their female counterparts during the winter breeding season in Hawaii. These
songs, which include repeated themes, phrases and patterns, are sung by males
who suspend themselves head down, about 50 to 75 feet beneath the surface of the
water.
While singing, the male whale is motionless, as if in a trance, except for the
slow movement of its pectoral fins forward and back. All males in Hawaii sing
the same song, with the song evolving during the winter mating season. It is not
known why they sing. Researchers theorize it may be to attract females, to
incite other males in competition, or to advertise the strength and virility of
the singer.
Grill and Leung are devoting a portion of the sales of their albums to the
Pacific Whale Foundation's work of saving whales and their ocean habitats
through research, public education and marine conservation. You may purchase
"Whale Cry of the Ocean" at the Pacific Whale Foundation's Stores and Marine
Resource Centers, at 143 Dickenson St., Lahaina, or at the Kealia Beach Plaza,
101 N. Kihei Road, Kihei. You can also order your copy by phone by calling
1-800-942-5311. The cost is $16.95 plus shipping and handling.

Isle of Dreams is the encore to

Sail along with these two original musicians as they mesmerize you with swirling
pan flute melodies, sparkling piano and lush orchestration. Close your eyes and

"Music for
Two," by Pierre Grill and Ernie Provencher: Pianist Pierre Grill and bassist
Ernie Provencher collaborate on a joyful session that moves from jazz to pop and
a little soul. The session was recorded without rehearsal, in one take, to tap
the spontaneity and the give-and-take of a live performance. BYO applause. The
selections serve the duo well, eliciting colorful and confident
performances. It's more about artistry than commerce as they swim through a sea
of instrumentals, some with jazz origins ("A Night in Tunisia," "Cantaloupe
Island," "Equinox"), one with soul roots ("Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"), a couple with
blues-pop foundations ("There Will Never Be Another You," "What Is This Thing
Called Love?"). A kinder, gentler combo would be hard to find.

David "Kawika" Kahiapo has been known for years as one of the great
"side-men" in contemporary Hawaiian music. His gutar artistry and vocals
have adorned the recordings and live performances of such artists as
Na Leo Pilimehana, Jesse Rivera, Palani Vaughan,
Chucky Boy Chock, 'Eha, Kekolu, and more. His father
Samuel provided a firm musical foundation for young Kawika, and early family
gatherings provided the opportunity to play with the legendary Gabby
"Pops" Pahinui, something few musicians his age can boast.
Kawika released his debut solo CD, entitled ’Alana in 1996. It featured guest appearances by friends Lehua Kalima (of Na Leo Pilimehana), Jesse Rivera, Chinky Mahoe and Kelly Boy Delima. Of the CDs 12 cuts, 10 are original compositions, and Kawika has recorded innovative, contemporary arrangements of two Hawaiian standards - 'Opihi Moemoe and Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua. In 1999 he teamed up with Del Beazley and Dwight Kana’e to form 3D. And he has just released his second solo recording, One Heart, One Voice.
’Alana by Kawika Kahiapo 1996 says "to Pierro Grill, I send "Da Kine, Big
Mahalo, la dat!" It was a great pleasure to work with a master such as
yourself." Alana is a celebration of love, family, religious faith and
Hawaiian heritage. David is joined by friends Jesse Rivera, Kelly Boy DeLima,
Chinky Mahoe, Lehua Kalima and Pierre Grill. In Kawika's own words, "Alana
is songs about special people and places". |

Dear Lea... Wow..
I finally had a chance to check out my "page" on your website! So much work..
Congratulation. In this crowded cyber space, having any hit is amazing, and
having 10000 is fantastic. My own website is not exactly on the same
"overflowing" mode. I just have one page working. That stuff takes a lot of time
and I thank you very very much for spending time on my accomplishments. I must
be a star already! I have a page (not working yet) called Friends of RVR that
will feature my clients and would have links. I'll get to it one day. I am not
doing the website myself, so anything like this has to be done by the webmaster,
and lately, I have been very busy and that stuff takes a back seat. Thank you so
much for your support and love for Hawaiian Music. I hope we can meet one of
these days. Aloha, Pierre
