Carleton Lewis Keali' inaniaimokuokalani Reichel (born 1961) popularly known as Keali’i Reichel, is a popular and bestselling singer, songwriter, choreographer, dancer, chanter, scholar, teacher, and personality from the State of Hawaii. He has spent his life educating the world about Hawaiian culture through music and dance.
Keali’i (pronounced Kay-ah-LEE-ee) Reichel was born and raised on the island of Maui. Reichel grew up in the town of Lahaina where he attended Lahainaluna High School, however he spent weekends and summers with his maternal grandmother in the plantation town of Pa'ia. At the age of 24, Reichel was convicted of a crime, and was sentenced to community service, which involved a study of Hawaiian culture. This marked a turning point in his life, as he decided to devote the rest of his life to the study and promotion of Hawaiian culture.
Reichel was one of the founding directors for Punana Leo O Maui, a Hawaiian language immersion pre-school. He has taught Hawaiian culture and language at the University of Hawaii's, Maui Community College, and he was the Cultural Resource Specialist and Curator at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku.

Hawaiian music
What on the surface may appear to be a case of "overnight success" is anything but that. Keali'i's years of work and dedication to the perpetuation of Hawaiian language, culture, hula, and chanting led him down the road to stardom. The overwhelming success of his subsequent releases firmly established him as the preeminent Hawaiian artist of the 1990s. Reichel studied Hawaiian dance and vocals under Kumu hula (dance instructor/choreographer/master) Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele, daughter of the kumu hula and Hawaiian scholar Edith Kanaka'ole. He later founded his own hula halau (Hawaiian dance troop) Halau hula o ka Makani Wili Makaha o Kaua'ula
In 1994, at the age of 33, he independently produced and released a collection of Hawaiian traditional and contemporary music entitled Kawaipunahele which broke him into his popular music career. Reichel’s subsequent music releases, Lei Hali`a (1995), 'E O Mai(1997), and Melelana(1999), have placed him at the top of the Hawaiian music entertainment industry. He is also featured in the Contemporary Hawaiian collections Pride of Punahele (1998) and Pride of Punahele 2 (2003). His most recent album Ke'alaokamaile(2004) took home four of the top awards at the 27th Annual 2004 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (the most honored local music awards in Hawai'i) including male vocalist of the year, album of the year, Hawaiian album of the year and song of the year.

All told, he has been awarded 17 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and been nominated in Hawaii's first Grammy category. Through his busy schedule he retains the initial goal of presenting new compositions in the Hawaiian language for hula students, and works to dispel long-held stereotypes of his birthplace. He has traveled extensively in the US Mainland, Japan, and the South Pacific spreading his message of Hawai`i and the living culture of her indigenous people.
Reichel’s style most often includes vocals over a guitar, bass, and ukulele ensemble but may also include orchestral and traditional Hawaiian instruments. His vocals include Hawaiian language chanting and singing in both Hawaiian and English. Stage performances include dance in both traditional and modern hula forms.

International recognition
Reichel currently has contracts with JVC Victor Entertainment and Atlantic/Time-Warner. Keali’i Reichel’s consistent placement in Billboard Magazine's World Music Charts has garnered him international attention. He has opened concerts for Bonnie Raitt, LeAnn Rimes, Céline Dion, and Sting. In addition to his regular concerts in Hawaii, he has toured the United States mainland playing in such places as New York at Carnegie Hall, San Diego, San Francisco, Anaheim, Hollywood, Phoenix, and in the pacific in Tahiti, Osaka and has performed to a sold out audience in Tokyo, Japan.
Reichel is known not only for his artistry, but for his teachings of Hawaiian culture to the rest of the world.

Keali'I Reichel Releases

Keali'i's first release shook the Hawaiian music universe and instantly established him as a force in the genre. It is probably his best-selling release, and many of the mele (songs or Hawaiian poetry) from this release are now standard repertoire for contemporary Hawaiian musicians.

Kawaipunahele

Keali'i's most recent release of all new material was a big winner at the 2004 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and includes his familiar mix of new compositions, Hawaiian standards, some English language material and chant. Ke'alaokamaile

Keali`i has started recording a new CD project which is set to be released in early November '06.

Melelana translates as “floating song” which can poetically mean "lullaby." This CD is full of Keali'i’s soulful and romantic ballads, original compositions and bombastic chants. The theme is love in all its forms, wrapped gently in this buoyant package.

Melelana

Lei Hali'a, or "Lei of Memories," was Keali'i’s second release and contains contemporary Hawaiian music grounded in traditional language and poetry, along with original compositions, chants, and a few familiar English songs. There is something for everyone here. Lei Hali'a

Keali'i's third CD was released in 1997 and nominated for five Hoku Awards. E O Mai received the Haku Mele Award for Puakea Nogelmeier's composition "Nematoda." Keali`i tackled the issues of Hawaiian sovereignty and the AIDS crisis. The romantic title track remains an all-time favorite

O Mai

Keali'i has released "Kamahiwa - Keali`i Reichel Collection," a compilation of Keali'i's music on October 11, 2005. The collection focuses on the haku mele, the Hawaiian poetry and contemporary composers, of Keali'i's previously released CD's. This is a two-CD set, with the second disc containing all the recorded chants from previous albums, plus two chants from "Na Kumu Hula - Look To The Source." Kamahiwa meaning "cherished" Hawai`i Music Awards results
"Kamahiwa: The Keali`i Reichel Collection" has been named Best Anthology and has received the Christian Reese Lassen Best Album Artwork award from the Hawai`i Music Awards.

The triumphant career of Keali`i Reichel gets its first retrospective look, with the double-disc “Kamahiwa: Collection One.” The first disc is filled with hit songs, such as “Kawaipunahele,” “Hanohano Ka Lei Pīkake,” “Toad Song,” “Ka Nohona Pili Kai,” “Ipo Lei Momi,” and the only non-Hawaiian number, the wedding favorite “The Road That Never Ends.” Disc two showcases Reichel’s chanting prowess on eleven selections (including two that were recorded for the second volume of a various artists series, “Nā Kumu Hula.”) Packaging for the set is impressive, from the full set of lyrics and translations, to the detailed notes on Hawaiian culture and poetic composition, to the environmentally-friendly and artistically-magnificent packaging. Certainly a recommended starter set for those who don’t yet have any of Reichel’s albums, but it should also be popular with those who have been following him for the past decade; a cherished gift for all (“cherished” being the English translation of the album’s title.)
