I was the VP in Danny's first fan club back in the 80's

Lea, I must commend you for all the hard work. I know what it takes to be behind the scenes.

I've kept in touch with his dad more often than I did with Danny because his dad treated me like a daughter when I was living on Oahu going to college and helping to run and promote Danny's fan club and music - just like you're doing now Lea!

I can still recall the many promotional events that we accompanied Danny to - the autograph sessions at the music and department stores, radio visits (like KIKI), live shows, etc. It was a lot of fun! We even had Danny to ourselves sometimes - Danny took Rene and me to see the movie "Flash Dance" at one time, we went dancing at a night club one night, hung around at a recording session, etc. - all wonderful memories. I'm glad that I had the privilege of working with Danny because in a way it prepared me for a career in the PR/Marketing business, which I eventually fell into.

Some Photos in the slideshow you put together, I donated to Fanaddicts that are in b/w I took of his solo debut concert at the Waikiki Shell on September 23, 1983. The Famous Shell Amphitheater, Photo taken by Lea (click on to go to photos of Danny at the shell NOW)

I first met Danny when The Aliis visited my high school. I was a senior and on the journalism staff reporting for our school newspaper. I took some pictures (which I'll share with you), heard them sing a capella, and was instantly captured by their beautiful voices and talent. Being so young, I was quickly enamored by Danny...but got over it once I came to know the real Danny and eventually his family! I remember how he was always affectionate and sweet. Here are a couple of pictures of Danny and me taken on Kauai in 1982.
This one was taken at the Kauai Resort Hotel where the group performed numerous times. There I was all prepared for the camera, but didn't expect Danny to sneak a kiss just before the camera went off! I was a little embarrassed thinking "How could he be so forward??!!", nonetheless, I was very flattered.
This one was taken at their autograph signing session at Gems Department Store (that store went out of business!) - February 13, 1982.

I'm also attaching a scanned copy of the draft of "Danny's Notes", Danny's fan club's first newsletter that Rene and I put together.
I don't have any pictures taken of Danny when he competed on "Star Search". It was such a last minute thing that I did that I didn't think to bring a camera. Charles had called me not a moment to soon. Besides, I think flash photography was restricted during the taping. My friend and I were sitting in the audience. Afterwards, we hung out with Danny in the lounge at the hotel he was staying at in L.A. until the early morning just talking story and going over his performance. That's great that he shared that video clip with you! It was a thrill to relive it again!
If you're looking for more stuff on Danny, have you tried asking his dad? Charles had to be is his biggest fan, I think. When we were running his fan club back then, his father was kind of like an "advisor". He was and is very proud of Danny.

"I was so surprised to see that old picture of Danny and us at Moanalua Gardens that Lovelyn sent in and you put on the website! I'm the second one from the left! It afforded me the opportunity of getting back in touch with Lovelyn after all these years. Mahalo" >
I've been in touch with Danny off and on through the years. The last time I saw him was at his Star Search performance. I was already here in Southern California going to college when his dad got a hold of me to tell me he was going to be on the show!

My Life as a Teen Groupie
I wasn’t your typical groupie. If you were to compare me with a groupie in the Beatle days, I was hardly the type. Oh sure, I was an avid fan dedicated to the artist of my affection and admiration, but I wasn’t hanging out at his door, crying my eyes out and covering my bedroom walls with his pictures – although I hate to admit that was nearly the case with my unquenchable infatuation with Shaun Cassidy during my pre-teen years!

No, I think the only difference was my genuine friendship with this talented artist – a friendship cultivated from the beginnings of an enamored teenager, devoted follower and finally a good friend and partner. Unlike Shaun, this artist was not beyond my reach. He was a rising star upon my meeting him, but as I was given the privilege of getting to know this man, my selfish adoration developed into feelings of humble respect and admiration for an incredibly gifted entertainer unmatched by any other.

I was only 17 when I met Danny Couch. He was a member of The Aliis, a popular Hawaiian group, touring the high schools throughout the state of Hawaii. Because I was on my school’s newspaper staff, I was given the assignment to take pictures and report on the group during their visit to my high school Kapaa High School 2-10-82.
I barely knew of the band and so little did I know what I was in for.
I was late. I walked into the room when The Aliis were just being introduced by our music director. (photos in slideshow) I was trying to find the perfect spot to take my pictures when I spotted Danny. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, that guy’s really cute!”
They began singing a capella. I nearly froze – I only managed to take a few shots. I was too captivated to do anything else except stare! Their voices were so melodic and when Danny took his solo during “Lady, You’re My Rainbow”, I had to pick my lower jaw off the floor! I managed to interview the members…my thoughts spinning…already strategizing my next move. Not only did I walk away with a great story for our paper, but an image of a gorgeous, young entertainer whose face and voice were forever etched in my mind and adolescent fantasies!

I might as well have been walking on air after that. I couldn’t get him out of my head! The next day they had an autograph session at a local department store to promote their album, Gems. Wild horses couldn’t stop me from going to see them one more time. All I can remember is waiting to take a picture with Danny. When it was my turn, I was astonished when he insisted that I sit on his lap! Although a bit embarrassed at first, I was delighted to be treated in such a special way – after all, I didn’t see him asking anyone else to do the same!
I would have many more encounters with Danny from then on. The turning point was meeting some officers and members of The Aliis Fan Club when they accompanied the group during one of their earlier visits to Kauai. They had made an impression on me and I wanted to be part of the fun and excitement. After becoming such a “regular” participant in their audience and events, I was asked by the club officers and the group to be their Kauai fan club representative. I was thrilled and honored to accept. Every time they performed on Kauai, I helped to promote their shows and assisted with the sale of their albums and souvenirs. Not only was this an exciting adventure, but I perceived this as a valuable experience for me. I had thought to pursue a major in marketing and public relations after I graduated from high school and what better way to acquire the tools to prepare me for this profession!

The group performed numerous times at the Kauai Resort Hotel. Their shows were always an assortment of wonderful musical renditions, amusing parodies and exquisite repertoire. Although Danny was also their drummer and sometimes felt more comfortable behind the group, I knew that he was destined to be a headliner. His charming stage presence and soulful performances would bring me goose bumps. Unbeknownst to him, Danny would be one of the most influential

Danny with group of Lina's friends while on Kauaipeople in my life.
After high school, I had plans to attend college on the mainland, but decided to first acclimate myself to college life without taking such a big step. Besides, I was having too much with the fan club. I moved to Honolulu to attend a local university. Shortly after my involvement in The Aliis Fan Club, Danny decided to pursue a solo career. After a series of events, I became the vice president of his first fan club, “Friends of Danny Couch”, as a solo artist. From that moment on, our friendship blossomed and I delighted in our partnership and every opportunity we had to just “hang out.”
Danny’s solo concert debut on September 23, 1983, was a pinnacle moment for Danny as well as for his fans. While sharing the stage with fellow entertainers Malani Bilyeu and The Kasuals, he demonstrated his versatility performing a few of the latest tunes, touching ballads, good ole’ rock ‘n’ roll and much more! For the next several months, I helped lead the fan club to many wonderful activities – fundraisers, picnics, special concerts, etc. Then in the fall of 1984 I gave up my position to transfer to a college in Southern California. I managed to stay in touch almost every year with Danny’s father, Charles, while I was away. Because of Charles, I was able to attend the taping of Danny’s appearance on Star Search in 1986 in L.A. I hadn’t seen Danny for over 2 years so I was excited that I was able to spend time with him after the taping.

A year later I was able to go back “home” for a visit. On my way to Kauai I stopped over on Oahu and surprised Danny by attending one of his performances at Trappers in Waikiki. It was really good to see an old friend. That was the last time I saw Danny. I returned to the mainland and remained after college graduation. I went on to juggle a full-time career, marriage and family. From time to time, I would get a Christmas card from Charles and after moving a few times, I lost touch with him. Sometime in 1999 I stumbled upon Danny’s website and was pleased to see how he withstood the test of time and was still making a name for himself – almost 20 years later! Via Danny’s website, I got in touch with him briefly and was flattered that he still remembered me. Then life got in the way again. It wasn’t until the summer of 2003 when I stumbled on his website again and noticed that it was redesigned.
Through the links page I discovered a Fan Website and the next thing I knew, I was back in touch with Danny, reunited with another old friend and former Aliis fan club member, and made a new friend with the Fan Website creator and hostess, Lea Cook.

My regret is that I missed out on a lot of great things in Danny’s career. I may be older now but I still have a heart for Danny’s music. It is a blessing that I’ve been given another chance to have Danny in my life again. My hope is to renew my friendship with Danny and be able to see him again soon so that I can have the opportunity to introduce him to the  loves of my life, my husband and children.

Mahalo to Lovelyn who Wrote in:

I would like to write a brief story about being in Danny's fan club as well as The Aliis fan club.
I first met The Aliis  in 1982 when they did a concert at my high school, . I also attended the same High School as Benny Chong, Joe Mundo, and Bobby King, members of The Aliis. I thought that Danny was the cutest guy in the group and had to meet him at the end of the show. And that's what I did. It was then that I learned that they had a fan club and decided to join. Can't remember if Rene was there with them or not. If I remember correctly, they were the ones who started this trend--to do concerts at local high schools to promote their new/latest work (new releases). The Krush, The Kasuals, and Frank DeLima (besides The Aliis) did these special acts. There was a fee to join the fan club but can't remember how much it was. We also did fund raisers to help keep the fan club running. The one fund raiser I most remember was doing a car wash at a restaurant parking lot. It was at the corner of Kapiolani and Kalakaua. Can't
Lovelyn's family with Danny after 20 years. remember that old restaurant's name, it's where Hard Rock Café stands now. Their manager Robin Mann was on a show years ago called "Romper Room." She was also a college professor-Sociology. The Aliis Fan Club presidency also traveled to Kauai with them, I followed to help out. After Danny left the group, I still helped and later found out it was no longer for me. The women who took over the Aliis fan club was much older-- I was the youngest that stayed back after Danny left. I don't know if any of the guys knew about it.

I have sent you the pictures taken at the Honolulu airport . They were taken on Saturday, August 27, 1983. This day, I believe was the last time I ever saw him "Until Now." I believe he was doing a tour for his first solo album. Here Are My Songs. More about that on our solo days page.

To both Lovelyn and Lina ~I'm so thrilled I was able to surprise you by having the park photo online when you first checked out our website... Lovelyn was very gracious to send it in 2004.  It was nice to get your emails. I was so thrilled I had to forward them to Danny which sparked a bit of nostalgia.. Seems this website can reunite not just fans, but old friends and bring out the older fans as well as Danny's new ones.

Thanks so much for getting in touch, and to both of you I appreciate your support and generosity of your special contributions, and cherish your friendships. .

I truly wish I had known Danny and The Aliis during his early years I would have loved to hear them live. I enjoy his music so much and knowing and working this website with him is a delight.  Needless to say I'm honored and so proud to have his confidence and be allowed to debut his new music. It's a lot of work doing it solo but every keystroke is done with Aloha. I would have enjoyed being able to see and hear The Aliis in person and put pictures to stories and songs.

I'd love any great stories about his Aliis days of course having any special touches will improve the website and fascinate his fans. That's exactly what you both have done. Brought a bit of the "Then" to the "Now". ~Mahalo
We are here to spread the aloha spirit with Hawaiian Music all over the world, this small dedication is a good place to begin.

~Music is going to break the way because music is in a spiritual thing of its own. It's like the waves of the ocean.

You can't just cut out the perfect wave and take it home with you~
