Hawaii singing Artists back smoking ban in upcoming concert Danny Couch among the performers

Bravo, Hana Hou to these Performers!

Show your support at The Breathe Concert's MYSPACE
The American Lung Association of Hawaii is bringing together Hawaii entertainers for a concert to celebrate a controversial new smoking ban. "Passage of the law that prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, airports, offices and all other public spaces was a milestone in public health," said association director Jean Evans. "We must protect this pro-health law and focus attention on the necessity to retain and strengthen it during the 2008 legislative session." The Jan. 12, 2008 concert will be held at Hawaii Theatre and will feature the premiere of "Breathe," a song written especially for the American Lung Association by Johnson Enos, produced by Kenneth Makuakane and vocal arrangements by Aaron J. Sala

Local singer Loretta Ables Sayre said second-hand smoke has made performing difficult for her. A concert is planned by Island entertainers who advocate for laws that protect the quality of indoor air in which they perform.
A concert by 23 Island entertainers, advocating laws that protect the quality of indoor air in which they perform, will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Hawai'i Theatre — four days before the 2008 Legislature convenes.

"Our timing is no coincidence," said Jean Evans, executive director of the American Lung Assn. Hawai'i, which supports the law that prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants and other public places. There is a challenge to roll back the prevailing law.

Entertainer Cathy Foy-Mahi, who is chairing the awareness songfest, themed "Breathe Concert — Clean Air for Everyone," said, "I sing for a living and can't tolerate smoking where I earn my livelihood."

Loretta Ables Sayre, an Island singer bound for Broadway where she will star as Bloody Mary in Lincoln Center Theater's revival of "South Pacific," said, "I am asthmatic and suffered for years signing in public while surrounded by smokers." The problem was at its worst when cigar smokers affected her ability to perform. "I absolutely could not breathe and my doctors said I was in serious risk of losing my voice altogether because of the second-hand smoke."

The concert will be preceded by the release of a song entitled "Breathe," composed by Island tunesmith Johnson Enos. The tune includes a Hawaiian verse by Kenneth Makuakane, who arranged the music, with Aaron J. Sala providing the vocal arrangement.

The concert will assemble a diverse roster of performers:
Jan Brenner, singer-dancer who has opened concerts for The Beach Boys and Tom Jones.
Rocky Brown, an original member of Broadway's "Miss Saigon" cast with a career here, in the Philippines and in New York.
Keahi Conjugacion, recording artist who also has done charitable work.
Tony Conjugacion, a singer and kumu hula, also with "Miss Saigon" ties.

Danny Couch, a Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and Hawaii Music Award winner who has performed with Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand.

The Diamond Head Shooting Stars, a children's ensemble with origins with Diamond Head Theatre.
Yvonne Elliman, the Hawai'i native who performed as Mary Magdalene in "Jesus Christ Superstar" on Broadway and in the movies.
Cathy Foy-Mai, an award-winning winner and nominee in theatrical awards and an original cast member of the off-Broadway "Song of Singapore."
Raiatea Helm, a Moloka'i native who is a multiple Na Hoku award winner.
Ka Hale I o Kahala Halau Hula, led by kumu Leimomi Maldonado.
The Rev. Dennis Kamakahi, award-winning singer, composer and member of Eddie Kamae's Sons of Hawai'i.
Jay Larrin, a Tennessee transplant who has been a prolific Island composer and award-winning recording artist.
Kristian Lei, who played Kim in "Miss Saigon" in Germany and appeared in the Hawaii Opera Theatre's "The King & I."
Zanuck Lindsey, Hoku Award-winner with numerous performing credits around the world.
Shari Lynn, veteran of numerous community stage musicals such as "Gypsy" and "Fiddler on the Roof."
Shawna Masuda, a star of such local productions as "Miss Saigon" and "Beauty and the Beast."
Guy Merola, an active member of the theater and opera community and advocate of the performing arts.
Angela Morales and daughter Sheldeen Morales, with mom a member of Na Leo Pilimehana trio and daughter embarking on a singing career.
Aaron J. Sala, a singer-pianist known for his "Hawaiian swing" style and his arranging credentials in the Kamehameha Schools Song Contest.
Jordan Segundo, the first Hawai'i finalist in the second season of Fox's "American Idol" who has opera, TV and other credits.
Afatia Thompson, a former University of Hawai'i football running back and a Na Hoku award winner for hip-hop music.
Al Waterson, a singer, recording artist and emcee best known for his "Al Waterson and You" ongoing singing competition.
"Destination Groove Dance Hawaii," featuring dancers from the ongong TV reality show-competition in the Islands.
Tickets are available through the Hawai'i Theatre box office. Proceeds will enable the lung association to continue its campaign to uphold the clear-air law.

Home Sweet Home! ~ Mahalo Robyn

Hale Koa launches $50M renovation  The military hotel is the latest in a series of Waikiki hotel upgrades
The Hale Koa Hotel said yesterday it has started a $50 million renovation that includes upgrades to 420 guest rooms, the main lobby and primary kitchen.
Both of the hotel's towers will remain open during construction, which is slated to finish in March 2009. It is the first major renovation since the hotel, owned by the U.S. Army, opened in 1975. The hotel said does not expect to lay off any workers.

The Hale Koa Hotel said it is launching its first major renovations since opening in 1975, following several other recent Waikiki hotel upgrades. The $50 million project includes improvements to 420 guest rooms, the main lobby and primary kitchen, which will be completed in stages while the hotel's two towers remain open.

Work on the 14-floor Ilima Tower will be finished several floors at a time, with construction currently being done on the second, third and fourth floors, spokeswoman Lucy Lau said. Work on the tower is expected to be completed by August. Rooms in the 12-floor Maile Tower, which was built in 1995 and has already undergone upgrades, will not be affected, she said. The hotel has 817 rooms.
"The mission is to provide a quality R&R location for our servicemen and women," she said. "We are updating it to look more in the style of what a guest would expect to see in a higher-class hotel."

Renovations also include the main kitchen, which will close for six months starting in January, and the lobby, which will see periodic construction throughout the project. The Bibas and Koko Cafe restaurants will keep their kitchens open during construction, and banquet food preparation will be moved to the hotel's pantry kitchen on the ground floor. The hotel's fine dining Hale Koa Room will close for three months, with the last service on New Year's Eve. All renovations, which started in October, are slated to finish by March 2009.

Up to 100 of the hotel's 960 employees will be affected by the renovations, Lau said. Hale Koa has worked with hotel workers union Unite Here Local 5 and is encouraging long-time employees to take leave time during the construction, she said. Some employees -- primarily kitchen and housekeeping staff -- will be moved to other Hale Koa departments.
The hotel, which also left some positions unfilled after the busy summer months, does not expect to layoff any employees because of the project.

The U.S. Army owns and operates Hale Koa as well as the surrounding Fort DeRussy area. Hale Koa's rates are based on military rank or civilian grade, and are determined during the military's fiscal year, which runs October through September. Lau said rates are not expected to jump as a result of the renovations. Planning for the Hale Koa renovations began seven years ago, but were put on hold to wait for the completion other Armed Forces Recreation Center property improvements in Germany and Florida, Lau said. General contractor Kiewit Building Group won the renovation contract. Kiewit has worked on renovation projects the Hale Koa and Kahala Hotel, and is currently building the Trump International Hotel and Tower in a joint venture project with construction firm AC Kobayashi Inc.

In June, Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Hotel will shut down for a seven-month facelift, estimated to cost $110 million, as part of the larger $750 million redevelopment of Sheraton's four Waikiki hotels by Japan-based owner Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts LP. Also, hotel company Outrigger Enterprises Group closed thousands of budget and economy rooms to develop its Waikiki Beach Walk project.

I have put up a slideshow for the Lyrics of Danny's songs Kalua ~To Where You Are..
I've been collecting items from the movie "Bird of Paradise" for some time now, where the song Kalua originated and that Danny has sung about for several years. (actually since Danny first sang this song at The Hale Koa Luau) they've been screaming to me to "get it together" I've compiled this slideshow with this in mind and it spurs some great memories.
Please take a look. I hope you will enjoy..
