![]() HONOLULU, Hawaii, June 9, 2009 -- Danny Couch tells Hawaiian Broadcast first about his past difficulties that he could feel, but doctors could not find with his voice... Danny Couch talks about how difficulties with his voice took him out of performing for about a year, and it wasn't until Danny took issues literally into his own hands (or fingers) to convince his doctors that there was a problem. Now he's making way back to full voice and more.... Where did Danny Couch go to school, who influenced him to get into entertainment, and what happened after the hit album from the Alii's that had the hit song "Lady Your My Rainbow"? The
Ventures Guitarist and Co-Founder Bob Bogle Dies at 75 known for hits like
‘Walk, Don’t Run’ and 'Hawaii 5-0'
June 16th, 2009
TACOMA, Wash. — Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The
Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits including “Walk, Don’t Run,” and
"Hawaii 5-0" has died at age 75.
Don Wilson, the band’s other co-founder, told The News Tribune of Tacoma that
Bogle became ill over the weekend and died Sunday. Bogle, a resident of
Vancouver, Wash, died on Sunday. He suffered from non-Hodgkin lymphoma and
became too frail to play with the Ventures in his waning years, but lived long
enough to see his band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March
2008.
Bogle became ill over the weekend and was taken to a hospital according to
Ventures co-founder Don Wilson, Bogle’s friend and musical collaborator of more
than five decades.
“Even though you know it’s gonna happen, when it does it’s like a bomb dropping
on you,” said Wilson, who lives in Sammamish. Friends, peers and admirers
recalled the lack of ego that accompanied Bogle’s virtuosity.
“He was a very creative, talented person,” said Buck Orsmby of the Fabulous
Wailers, the Tacoma band that paved the way for the Ventures. “He looked like he
was so relaxed in everything he did,” Ormsby said. “He could accomplish a whole
lot just by looking like he was not accomplishing it. And he was a great guy,
just one of the nicest guys you’ll ever want to meet.”
The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists.
It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. The hall’s Web site
hailed The Ventures as “the most successful instrumental combo in rock and roll
history.”
“Walk, Don’t Run” reached No. 2 on the Billboard chart in 1960, and a revised
version, “Walk, Don’t Run ‘64,” reached No. 8 in 1964. It would become one of
the most influential songs in rock history, sparking a remarkable run that saw
the Ventures chart with 38 albums between 1960 and 1972 albums alone, en route
to more than 100 million records sold. Among the band’s other hits were “Perfidia”
and the theme from “Hawaii Five-O.”
The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle initially played lead and bass
and Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another
guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.
“Our aspirations were to pick up nothing heavier than a guitar,” Wilson said
last year. “But it just mushroomed into something where we became
internationally known.”
The Ventures were particularly popular in Japan, where Wilson and Bogle played
as a duo during their first tour in 1962 because the promoter couldn’t afford to
pay the other two band members.
The two Americans made such an impression, Wilson recalled last year, that when
the band came back in 1964, “there were 6,000 people at the airport.” He said he
didn’t realize at first the Japanese fans were there to see The Ventures.
Bob Bogle, the lead guitarist and co-founder of instrumental rock band the
Ventures, died Sunday at age 75. Bogle suffered from Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma but
survived long enough to see the group get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame last year.
The Tacoma-based band started in the late '50s when Bogle met Don Wilson and the
two became co-workers in the construction business. After realizing they both
dabbled in guitar, the pair decided to form a group in their spare time in 1958.
Two years later, the band recorded an upbeat version of 'Walk Don't Run' --
based on Chet Atkins' 1957 take on the Johnny Smith jazz instrumental from two
years earlier -- which hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart only months
later.
The band's distinctive style, particularly Bogle's guitar leads, is credited as
the inspiration for the unique "surf rock" sound. Speaking of 'Walk Don't Run'
at last year's Rock Hall induction ceremony, Creedence Clearwater Revival's John
Fogerty said, "That song started a whole new movement in rock 'n' roll. The
sound of it became 'surf music' and the audacity of it empowered guitarists
everywhere." The group later went on to have hits with 'Perfidia' and '<b>Hawaii
Five-O</b>.' Due to his failing health, Bogle stopped performing with the group
in recent years and was unable to attend the Rock Hall induction ceremony in
March 2008.
"Boy, I tell you, he's the brother I never had," Wilson told the Seattle Times.
"And he is much more than any brother could be. He and I were partners for,
like, 52 years. And to tell you the honest truth, we had never, ever had an
argument in all that time -- never." Bogle is survived by his wife, Yumi, and
funeral arrangements are still pending, though Wilson believes they will happen
Thursday or Friday.

Hotel in the Hawai‘i Ballrooms Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
The group wins three Hokus at the Hawaii music industry's
leading awards event
By John Berger
"More for less" turned out
to be the key to success last night as Pali T.W. Ka'aihue and his namesake
group, Pali, won a pace-setting three Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for their work on
their economically priced double CD "...with Aloha," as the Hawai'i Academy of
Recording Arts announced the winners in 26 categories in the Hawaii Ballroom of
the Sheraton-Waikiki.
"...With Aloha" won Album of the Year and Island Music Album of the Year. Ka'aihue also won Song of the Year, a composer's award, for "Island Days," one of the songs on the album.
Natalie Ai Kamauu won Female Vocalist of the Year for "'I." Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole won Male Vocalist of the Year and Hawaiian Language Performance for "Kaumakaiwa."
"'ikena," the album by Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho that won 2009 Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album in February and Contemporary Hawaiian Album at the Hawaii Music Awards in March, was barred from the Hoku ballot after Ho's distributor missed the filing deadline. The decision by the HARA Board of Governors to strictly enforce the filing deadlines this year also eliminated Ho's 2009 Grammy Award-finalist compilation album, "The Spirit of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar" and kumu hula Kawaikapuokalani Hewett's "Honehone i ka Poli."
This year's other three Grammy finalists all won a Hoku. "Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Master Series Vol. II," produced by Milton and Chris Lau, won Compilation Album, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom won Contemporary Album for "'Aumakua" and Ledward Kaapana and Mike Kaawa won Favorite Entertainer of the Year -- the only Hoku award currently determined by public vote. (Voting in three other categories is limited to "Regular" members of HARA; recipients in the two Hawaiian language categories are determined by a panel of specialists in Hawaiian song writing.)
Compilation Album was one of several awards that was announced before the start of the televised coverage. Lau described the win as "a great honor," adding, "We love what we do and we're passionate about it. To get an award is icing on the cake."
The winner in the Liner Notes category was also announced before the start of the televised awards show. Puakea Nogelmeier spoke for his co-winners, Keali'i Reichel and Fred Krauss, in reminding the audience that thorough annotation of Hawaiian music continues to be important "as we move into the digital age." "We can't leave liner notes and the written foundation and the information about the music behind. It's important to encourage the industry to keep that right hand in hand."

This was one big blast. Over 3 and a 1/2 hours of non-stop entertainment. And they all volunteered their time for this Tribute to Wayne Harada. And to top it off, all the funds will benefit Helping Hands Hawaii and The Honolulu Advertiser Christmas Fund, including the generous gifts of $5,000 going to each fund from the Great Aloha Run. It was definitely a win-win situation all around. But most of all, it was one heck of a retirement party for Wayne Harada.

Honolulu, HI – Popular, multiple award-winning entertainer, Danny Couch,
will be taking a break from his 18-month old show at the Sheraton
Princess Ka’iulani’s Ainahau Showroom after next week. His last
Wednesday-only show will be on October 15th, although Couch says this is
just a break and he is already planning special event shows, like
Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
“Yes, the economy is partly to blame,” said Shirley Cambe, Couch’s
manager. “But we look at this as a good time to re-energize and even
create a new show. We are so thankful to Danny’s many fans who have
supported him throughout his career, and want to assure them he will be
back soon, and will soon be releasing a new CD entitled “Danny Couch -
I'll Remember You,” which pays tribute to the late Don Ho and his songs.
To say “mahalo” to his many local fans, Couch extended complimentary
cover (no minimum, no-host cocktails) to kama’aina and military for this
last show, as follows:
From his initial push into the spotlight performing with the legendary
Don Ho and The Ali‘i’s, to claiming the world-wide stage as a star solo
performer, Danny Couch has a show that will be sure to have everyone
talking about...THE VOICE OF THESE ISLANDS!
“Danny Couch is, without question, the best young singer I have heard
from the Hawaiian Islands.”
- DON HO
“The Golden Voice of Hawaii.”
- DOLLY PARTON
“A sterling clean voice, a marvelous and suggestive voice, he works
wonders with lyrics. Any one of his ballads could go Top 10. A gemstone
of a voice, the best male voice in Hawaii”
- WAYNE HARADA, The Honolulu Advertiser
“And then there’s the voice. He brings each song to life – singing the
emotions rather than the words.”
- JOHN BERGER, The Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Bobby King, bass

I'm sure each one of us is saddened by this news and wishes Danny the
best in his future endeavors.
A
bit more about Danny's Show was forwarded to me this AM. along with a
note stating Danny will be back soon. Don't know if you can get it, but
he was interviewed on KGMB last night at 6 & 10pm. Danny Couch Show in Waikiki on Hiatus Interview with Danny Written by KGMB9 News - news@kgmb9.com October 10, 2008 06:29 PM VIDEO WITH DANNY http://kgmb9.com/main/content/view/10415/40/ Danny Couch Show in Waikiki on Hiatus The economy has caused another waikiki show to go dark. Danny Couch will be taking a break from his 18-month old show at Ainahau Showroom at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. Couch's manager says they'll use the time off to revamp and reenergize the show. His last performance will be Wednesday, October 15th at 7:30pm. And it's free for kama'aina. Economic Slump Forces Another Show Off Stage Recently, the multi-million dollar production Waikiki Nei went on hiatus, and now another Waikiki show is taking a break because of a slumping economy. <b>Economic Slump Forces Another Show Off Stage</b> Written by Tina Chau - tchau@kgmb9.com October 10, 2008 10:34 PM Recently, the multi-million dollar production Waikiki Nei went on hiatus, and now another Waikiki show is taking a break because of a slumping economy. Multiple-award entertainer Danny Couch is stepping down from the stage for now. His show, "The Voice of These Islands" is feeling the economic pinch. Over the last few months, more than half of the 500 seats have been empty. "It hurts me," Couch said. "I want to be here to give a lifeline to the people, I want to give hope, that's what my entire show is about is hope." Couch will use the time off, as much as a month and a half, to work on a CD. He says he will be back on stage soon with a revamped show to reach a wider audience. Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is also trying to reach more people. The center is now offering four hours of free parking if you eat at one of its restaurants The relatively new P.F. Chang's has already seen a slight slowdown and the China bistro is hoping the free parking will entice more people, especially Hawaii families, to drive down. "With the free parking -- that's probably the biggest complaint that locals have about coming to Waikiki -- that they can come down and enjoy some of the aloha we have down here," said Edward Locke, the restaurant's operating partner. The sluggish economy is helping some businesses. The Salvation Army thrift shop has seen a 33% increase in clothing sales so far this year. And the shoppers are not just low-income families looking for a bargain. "At one time we were middle to low middle but now we are seeing all levels of the spectrum," said Salvation Army's Rafael Escelera. While more people are shopping there, the store has seen a drop in the donations of bigger-ticket items like furniture, which goes to show, no one is immune to the economic troubles. Good buzz coming from Danny Couch's Wednesday-only shows at the Ainahau Showroom of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani hotel. A no-cover kama'aina special last week found him on stage nearly two hours despite a bit-scratchy throat, and he garnered three standing ovations from a crowd of about 180, which asked for specific tunes, eliciting abbreviated verses from the singer. ... And that's Show Biz. ... |

Hale Koa launches $50M renovation The
military hotel is the latest in a series of Waikiki hotel upgrades
The Hale Koa Hotel said yesterday it has started a $50 million renovation that
includes upgrades to 420 guest rooms, the main lobby and primary kitchen.
Both of the hotel's towers will remain open
during construction, which is slated to finish in March 2009. It is the first
major renovation since the hotel, owned by the U.S. Army, opened in 1975. The
hotel said does not expect to lay off any workers.
The Hale Koa Hotel said it is launching its first major renovations since
opening in 1975, following several other recent Waikiki hotel upgrades. The $50
million project includes improvements to 420 guest rooms, the main lobby and
primary kitchen, which will be completed in stages while the hotel's two towers
remain open.
Work on the 14-floor Ilima Tower will be finished several floors at a time, with
construction currently being done on the second, third and fourth floors,
spokeswoman Lucy Lau said. Work on the tower is expected to be completed by
August. Rooms in the 12-floor Maile Tower, which was built in 1995 and has
already undergone upgrades, will not be affected, she said. The hotel has 817
rooms.
"The mission is to provide a quality R&R location for our servicemen and women,"
she said. "We are updating it to look more in the style of what a guest would
expect to see in a higher-class hotel."
Renovations also include the main kitchen, which will close for six months
starting in January, and the lobby, which will see periodic construction
throughout the project. The Bibas and Koko Cafe restaurants will keep their
kitchens open during construction, and banquet food preparation will be moved to
the hotel's pantry kitchen on the ground floor. The hotel's fine dining Hale Koa
Room will close for three months, with the last service on New Year's Eve. All
renovations, which started in October, are slated to finish by March 2009.
Up to 100 of the hotel's 960 employees will be affected by the renovations, Lau
said. Hale Koa has worked with hotel workers union Unite Here Local 5 and is
encouraging long-time employees to take leave time during the construction, she
said. Some employees -- primarily kitchen and housekeeping staff -- will be
moved to other Hale Koa departments.
The hotel, which also left some positions unfilled after the busy summer months,
does not expect to layoff any employees because of the project.
The U.S. Army owns and operates Hale Koa as well as the surrounding Fort DeRussy
area. Hale Koa's rates are based on military rank or civilian grade, and are
determined during the military's fiscal year, which runs October through
September. Lau said rates are not expected to jump as a result of the
renovations. Planning for the Hale Koa renovations began seven years ago, but
were put on hold to wait for the completion other Armed Forces Recreation Center
property improvements in Germany and Florida, Lau said. General contractor
Kiewit Building Group won the renovation contract. Kiewit has worked on
renovation projects the Hale Koa and Kahala Hotel, and is currently building the
Trump International Hotel and Tower in a joint venture project with construction
firm AC Kobayashi Inc.
In June, Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Hotel will shut down for a seven-month
facelift, estimated to cost $110 million, as part of the larger $750 million
redevelopment of Sheraton's four Waikiki hotels by Japan-based owner Kyo-ya
Hotels & Resorts LP. Also, hotel company Outrigger Enterprises Group closed
thousands of budget and economy rooms to develop its Waikiki Beach Walk project.

ALOHA CAFE INC (253) 564-6240 7515 Chambers Creek Rd W. Tacoma WA Owned and operated by our friend, Bill Loose (Former member of The Aliis with Don Ho and friend of Danny's) Hearing the owner Bill sing and play his 12 string guitar entertaining you while you eat is the proverbial icing on the cake. He has an amazing voice and plays the guitar very well. I find his music both stimulating and relaxing, setting the perfect atmosphere for fine Hawaiian Dining at it's best. Bill sings and plays a mixture of traditional Hawaiian music as well as some songs that he wrote himself, and it's real easy to listen to while you dine. I personally recommend the Aloha Hawaiian Cafe, it's Ono Grinds! Does catering also.
