Danny Couch Acknowledges Bill Dana's Co-Authorship   From Wayne Harada

His name Jose Jiminez — he lives in Nashville now. That would be Bill Dana, one-time Honolulu and Hana resident, who relocated to country music turf with his wife, Evy. He has been involved in the American Comedy Archives Web site
www.emerson.edu/comedy a project of his alma mater, Emerson College in Boston. He e-mailed because one of his co-compositions,

"Christmas in Hawai'i," was recorded this year by Danny Couch. Couch didn't know of Dana's co-authorship of the tune, which was also written by the late Teddy Randazzo. Couch, who tweaked some of the lyrics, since has contacted Dana, and the authorship will be corrected in future pressings of the CD. ...

Hawai'i-based performer Danny Couch is taking the concept of the autograph one step farther into the digital age. He will personalize his new CD, "Christmas in Hawai'i," by recording a live dedication onto it.

"I thought I'd do a limited amount — 100," said Couch. But by last week, he had received nearly 200 requests — and counting — so he's upped the total he'll release to 500.

It's labor-intensive, because he has to record the greeting at the beginning of the disc before the music can be burned onto it. But he's bracing for the challenge.

Couch did a sample for a neighbor of his named Gloria, with whom he exchanges waves as he leaves his apartment. She wanted an autographed copy of his album, so he went to the studio to test the recorded dedication. He presented her with the CD, and said, "Listen to it."

"She did ... then she played the CD for everyone around here — she was so touched," said Couch. "She told everybody."

He figured he was onto something, so he kicked off the offer on his Web site.

Then it started snowballing. Placing discs in a lauhala basket, festooned with a red bow, he ran out of the containers.

The decision to do a premium Christmas item was spur-red, in part, by eBay sales of his earlier music.

"I found out that one of my singles, 'You Are the Best of My Life,' sold for $2,700," said Couch. Anything I've done with The Aliis (he is a former member) or solo has been getting $200 and $300."

Couch is singing his new Christmas song, "Christmas in Hawai'i," on the Starwood Hotels & Resorts float in Chicago's Thanksgiving Day parade. Upon return from that appearance, Couch will begin recording his "autographs." He has a list of names, matching mailing labels, and numbered certificates of authenticity.

"The one thing I can't afford to do is mix up the names," he said.

7 releases of diverse appeal just in time for Christmas

by Wayne Harada Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Island Christmas releases capture the twinkle of the season — with ample variation. You can have ballads, or go contemporary with budding Hawai'i stars. There's acoustic jazz and acoustic folk-country. How about a soundtrack to a Christmas stage show? A revival of a keiki classic? The Christmas stocking is bulging.

"CHRISTMAS IN HAWAI'I" BY DANNY COUCH; DANNY COUCH RECORDS

  • Genre: Adult contemporary.

  • Distinguishing notes: For his first Christmas CD, balladeer Couch assembles old and new tunes, delivering a solid, warm performance. The title song, co-written by the late Teddy Randazzo and Couch, sounds like a future Island classic, complete with keiki chorus. Couch brings endearing charm to soothing renderings of "Silent Night," "Merry Christmas Darling," "O Holy Night," "White Christmas" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas." And listen to those powerful high notes on "The Christmas Song."

  • The outlook: Couch fans have been hungering for a yuletide CD for years; it's here, it's wow.

  • Our take: One of Islands' best voices interprets some of the season's best.

Singer Danny Couch managed to complete 300 personalized Christmas greetings for those who paid a premium to buy his "Christmas in Hawaii" CD, on which he named the buyer or the recipient (if it was a gift) in a message that precedes the music. He hoped to sell 100, but 300 responded and got a certificate of authenticity, with the recording tucked in a lauhala basket. ...
