PAYING TRIBUTE:

JOHN BERGER / JBERGER@STARBULLETIN.COM
Pali Ka'aihue, center, welcomed Kalapana members Gaylord Holomalia, left, and
D.J. Pratt, Kaukahi guitarist Dean Wilhelm and man-about-town Donnie Martin to
the Pakele Lounge in the Ala Moana Hotel on July 31. Ka'aihue's last album,
"Pali Presents a Tribute," won the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for contemporary album
of year in June, and Kalapana is one of the groups to which it pays tribute.
INTERESTING ARTICLE ABOUT THE GROUP AND GRAMMYS
Pali Tuan W. Ka’aihue
With over twenty years invested in his musical passion, Pali Tuan W. Ka'aihue has had the honor to experience music in all aspects of the industry. Beginning with the earliest memories, contacts with the local music industry have included the opportunity to compose, produce, engineer, and record. Though naturally a baritone, his vocal ability enables him to sing in a tenor range, heard in the intricately woven harmonies of For You, from the debut release, and in Ku'u Lei Awapuhi and `Akaka Falls off of the group's brand new CD, In Harmony. His fondness for composition can be heard in the melodic orchestration of Ua Lilo I Ko Aloha and Island Days. On the groups newest release, Pali took an active role as producer and had specific ideas on the CD's engineering and mastering. Pali wanted to ensure a "live" approach was used in recording most of the vocals and instruments heard on In Harmony. With the first album, he was blessed with a prestigious Nä Hökü Hanohano Award nomination for "Most Promising Artist" and "Island Contemporary Album of the Year." Since its release,In Harmony has received three additional Nä Hökü Hanohano Award nominations (Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year; Group of the Year; Entertainer of the Year); won the 2004 Hawai`i Music Award's Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year as well as receiving a proclamation from Mayor of Honolulu, Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Pali eagerly looks forward to a bright future, having been blessed with the musical talents of his new brothers, creating beautiful harmony, both in music and in friendship.
Joseph 'Joey' Mokulehua
|
|
For Joseph 'Joey' Mokulehua, music is truly a family affair. The son of
'Aunty' Lawaina Mokulehua-Gonsalves and 'Uncle' Billy Gonsalves of the Paradise
Serenaders, Joey began his musical career shortly after high school, performing
in Japan and Hawaii. He performed for several years with the group Hawai'i Loa,
and apearred on two of their recordings, as well as a Paradise Polynesian Show
album. In addition, his sister Geri and brother John are part of the 2nd
generation of Paradise Serenaders. Joey brought his talents to PALI on July 4th.
Mark Kawakami
|
|
is an accomplished harmonica player and keyboardist. Mark also lends a
hand in percussion and on vocals whenever necessary. His searing harmonica solos
have amazed audience members after each live performance (e.g. emulating a
make-shift horn/brass section). In addition to music, Mark is a City & County
lifeguard and also keeps busy as a professional skateboarder.
Dwayne Kanani Keomaka
|
|
Dwayne is a professional musician with more than twenty years of stage performance experiences to his credentials. He has appeared as a finalist on the popular "Hawaii Stars" television Show and currently is a busy stage and studio musician. An accomplished singer, his natural, tenor vocals provide the high harmonies on most of the groups songs, while his guitar work fluctuates between percussive rhythms and melodic solos. His obvious flare for showmanship is always well received.
Nominated for the Hoku Awards in the categories: Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year, Group of the Year and Entertainer of the Year with their original accoustic compositions in their CD "In Harmony".

Pali wrote us saying "I'm a somewhat frequent visitor to your site... I found out about it from Pierre Grill. He engineered Danny's CD as well as both of my CDs. He turned me on to the Danny couch fanaddicts.com site one night at the studio (what an awesome, awesome site!!!). Danny's voice and music has been an inspiration for MANY folks here and abroad, and I consider him an entertainer's entertainer---to share the same category for the HMA's was truly an honor for us. I was at the Hokus the year he won for something to remember -he so deserved it!"
Mahalo & All the best, Pali
Aloha Pali, it's a great honor to have you join our Realm of distinguished featured fanaddicts. Allowing us the privilege of featuring your interview

Listen to pali's in harmony selections
Aloha Lea, Mahalo for the questions, and sorry it took so long. Once my web-guru is back in town, we'll be updating our links section to add your banner. Sorry, couldn't answer all of them (but I did call a few of the guys up and ask um this on the spot).
How long have you been involved/interested with music?
As for as the entire group goes, collectively, I'd say starting from 20 to 30+ years.
Are you an instrumental musician also? What is your favorite venue of entertainment?
Most of the guys in the band are. Both Shepherd and John are extremely talented, proficient and gifted jazz guitarists and IMHO, if you can play Jazz, you can play just about anything-in Shep's case.. he really can, not to mention he has perfect pitch)... The original PALI (self-titled CD) features a few of my instrumental compositions (Keli`i Slack-Key & Love... and my acoustic revamp of surf-guitar song, Misirlou).
Not so much instrumental, but entertainer nonetheless ~ Dwayne can entertain for hours with just an acoustic guitar and his voice. Aside from being the band's percussion player/once-in-while rhythm guitar player, Rory also enjoys composing original material-and has binders full of his songs.
For those that haven't seen us live, they're in for a treat ~ Mark is quite the virtuoso on harmonica.
What is your favorite Hawaiian Artist?
Wow. that's a hard one. I can say that we have MANY favorite artists: (disclaimer: this is just naming a few off the top of my head...)
(Click on links for more info)
* The Surfers/Clayton Naluai The Surfers (1961) Patrick Sylva, Bernard Ching, Clayton Naluai, Alan Naluai, This vocal group sang backup for Elvis' on the soundtrack recordings for Blue Hawaii, March 21 - 23, 1961.
(for more info click on links)
* Kalapana
* C&K
* Maunalua
* Ten Feet
* Ku`iokalani Lee (Kui Lee)
Favorite Non-Hawaii Artists
Oh geez. This one is even harder. Ok, just a few (collected from Shepherd and Pali)
<Shepherd's>
*Al Viola: Session guitar master, also Shepherd's teacher (do a Google search on him and you'll see he's recorded with some of the best: Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Don Ho and the list goes on...)
*Richard Kauhi: Harmonically speaking, one of the best musicians in Hawai`i. His knowledge and use of chordal harmonies, both instrumentally and vocally broadened musical boundaries.
*Beatles: This one is kinda self explanatory: their songwriting, the harmonies, the music. Nuff said.
<Pali's>
*Tommy Emmanuel: He was (1) part of why I transitioned to acoustic guitar, which also led me on the 'right' path of playing Hawaiian music. Called "the best finger style guitarist on the planet" by someone who would know-guitar legend Chet Atkins, Tommy is best known as the guitar player that closed out the 2000 Olympics in Australia. Even for those that aren't fans of guitar, his stage presence and charisma entertain and inspire.
*CGT: (aka California Guitar Trio) They were part (2) of why I went from electric guitar playing to acoustic. The CGT are a group of (3) students of King Crimson frontman Robert Fripp. They were 'bored' with conventional guitar tuning and decided to invent their own for the guitar and do songs in three-part guitar harmony. I'd seen them perform at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and was sold ever since.
*Eagles: Same description as what we have above for the Beatles: their music, their songwriting, their harmonies. Nuff said :)
If you play an instrument please let us know what it/they are and how long you've played.
The range of musical years clocks in around 20-30 years of experience.
name/main instrument: additional instruments:
Pali/ Guitar piano, drums
Shep/ Guitar piano, bass
Dwayne/ Guitar bass, percussions
Rory/ Percussions guitar
Mark/ Harmonica piano, bass, percussions
John/ Bass guitar
Is there a particular memory or funny situation during a performance that stands out in your mind that you can share with us?
Um, there was an ongoing joke that Mark should do the 'robot' during certain songs-just for the heck of it. Sure enough, during one of our performances, I'm singing some heart-felt ballad and Mark decides to 'robot.' John sees this and completely loses it onstage and was laughing so hard he'd whacked his bass and couldn't regain his composure for a while. Our little Spinal Tap moment. :)
Any Fan activity that has stood out? (keep it clean, LOL)
During one of our Brew Moon concerts, the Breeze 99.5FM was playing "For You" (from the first PALI Cd) on the radio. A car full of former-islanders, on their way to the airport to return home to the mainland heard "For You" and loved the song. When the Dj announced we were at Brew Moon that night, playing 'right now' they turned around and headed over to Ward Centre to catch one of our sets prior to heading back to the airport. Obviously, we dedicated and performed "For You" for them... that was a pretty special night.
Are you acquainted with Danny Couch?
Been a fan of his music for a while.I love the story about Pierre Grill taking you to our site.. can you add anything about that occasion?
It was really late one night during the mastering of "In Harmony." We were working on the mix for "`Akaka Falls" and he'd mentioned Danny recorded a beautiful version of that song too... and we talked about Danny's music, incredible vocal range and he'd asked if I'd ever seen your site. Next thing you know, he'd pulled it up and we were checking it out at about 2:30am :)
How did you meet Danny? Where, when and How?
Haven't had the chance yet.Are you From Hawaii originally?
Born and raised.Do you consider it to truly be paradise?
Yup. The people, the air, the spirit. Truly paradise.Favorite Place in Hawaii and why?
Hana. The spirit and atmosphere of Hana is incredible.Have you written/sung a song about a favorite place?
No, but my friend John Keawe has (off of the Heartfelt CD). And it's a beautiful song. Had the chance to back him up and sing the harmony on "Hana" during our CD Release Party a few weeks ago-that was a blast!
I just started writing an instrumental about my favorite place for the next CD.
Where have you been involved with your music?
Hawai`i and in Japan.Has your recent win with your CD in the Hawaii Music Awards brought you any surprises? More attention? Other Music offers or gigs?
A lot more attention... not to mention the honor of being able to perform at the Award Ceremony!
What other awards have you won? Which one stands out the most?
The HMA was the first one we'd won. We did receive two Na Hoku Hanohano nominations for the first CD which was such an honor sharing categories with some of the Island's best...
Where does your music reach? What are some of the places you get input from.
We get input from Japan, soldiers over in Iraq, Greece, Australia..
Any additional input since the HMA results came out?
We're just really honored to be a part of the HMA's this year and to share the category with such talent.
Are there any hurdles you still need to accomplish? Wish to accomplish?
We'd like to start touring in the summer, not sure how or when, but we're working on a few things. Oh, and a Grammy would be nice :)
Are there any drawbacks to being a music lover/performer in Hawaii?
Other than not being able to drive state to state to share our music, I can't think of any.
Are you in contact with any other artists or groups?
Yup, a number of other artists. Those involved on the CD, to other friends we've been blessed to have made by being in the industry.
Do you think they may have an interest in an interview and page at Fanaddicts? (if so could you please recommend?)
I'll check and will let you know :)
Have you worked with other performers as well? Singers? Live Broadcasts? Shows? If so please enlighten us.
Aloha Joe Radio Show, the Breeze's live at the Moana 'Concert in the Courtyard' Series. A few other smaller events that have been streamed as well.
What's the best and worst part of being involved with your music?
Best part would be when people know your songs, sing along or request a particular tune.
As for the worst... I'd have to get back to you on that one...
Do you have many people you receive feedback from?
Yes, sometimes more than we want :) (just kidding)...About how many e-mails do you get a day?
About music... people with questions about us/performance inquiries--roughly 20 or so.
Could you tell me a little bit about your feelings towards the Award situation in Hawaii?
Honestly, I think there's room for each: the Hawaii Music Awards; the Na Hoku Hanohano awards and now, the Grammys.
How long have you known Danny Couch, and where did you meet him? (since this is Danny's Fan Site I have to gear some questions towards him)
Haven't had the chance to meet Danny yet. Soon though!Have you seen him perform?
Oh yes. Phenomenal performer.What was the first Danny song you recall hearing or reviewing? What was your first impression?
Ah, My Hawai`i.... what a great song!
What are some of your favorite Danny Couch songs?
Ah, My Hawai`i, These Islands.... my 2 favorite of Danny's songs.
Your favorite Danny CD, and maybe why that's your favorite.
Almost Paradise, and then Here are my songs.
Have you met any other Celebs? Any that you would would be interested in meeting?
I've had a chance to meet a few, as far as would like to meet-there are a lot! :)
Who would you like to perform with, either in a concert setting or on a song or CD? And why?
Well, we've had a few of our dreams come try.. sharing the stage with Auntie Genoa and her son Eric Keawe. Performing "Island Days" with John Keawe at our CD release party was also very cool.
