John Cruz - Acoustic Soul
2006 18 July 16:30
After not being available in the Hawaiian market, Acoustic Soul is
being re-released and is available for sale in stores now.
This album includes radio hits like “Shine On,” which was recently
featured on MTV as part of World champion surfer
Kelly Slater’s
new MTV special, “Kelly Slater Celebrity Surf Invitational 2006.”
Three songs from “Acoustic Soul” are also featured on Kelly’s
much-hyped DVD, “Letting Go,” which was just released at the end of
April. Mainstream legend
Jackson Browne
is a HUGE Cruz fan saying, “John is a great songwriter and a great
singer…. He’s one of the best.” Also a big fan is
Jack Johnson,
who John has shared the stage with at many different venues across
the US. Word has it that John will be back in the studio recording a
much anticipated second album this summer!

CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII
HOKU WINNING ALBUM
Photo is not the cover
Danny Couch's Newest CD
Release and his FIRST Christmas Album. The more you listen the more detail you
hear. Lovely composition!!!!
CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII
is currently in the process of being released and should be available to fans
at his website in the very near future. This CD contains many of the best
loved Christmas Carols as well as an extra touch of Aloha with the Christmas
Spirit that only Danny can conjure up.
This album is a very special CD Debut for this webmaster as I became entranced
with Danny's voice the first time I heard him sing “Oh Holy Night” and I still
am.
My intentions for Fanaddicts Website originated by the fact that my love for
music in general was affected by a handsome stranger who took the microphone
one Christmas Eve seven years ago at a Karaoke Night at the Hale Koa Hotel.
Danny picked up the microphone, pushed the music aside, and sang (A cappella)
the most moving rendition of "Oh Holy Night" I had ever heard-- up until the
version on this CD. To this day I am still moved each time I hear it. Going to
Hawaii during the Holidays is not complete without hearing Danny sing this
carol at least once! A voice had never moved me like that before, nor has it
had the impact of this musical introduction.
Introduction
Come hear his beautiful Music Teaser Clips for “Christmas In Hawaii” once

special Christmas Present from Danny Couch to his fans where-ever they may be

to you, his fans it's now a reality. ~Lea Cook

SONNY LIM
Slack Key Guitar: The Artistry Of Sonny Lim
Grammy Nominated
[Palm Records]
a member of Hawaii’s famous musical
Lim family, was born and raised in the heart of paniolo (cowboy) country on the
Big Island. Sonny’s parents taught their children to play a variety of musical
instruments. His introduction to ki ho’alu (slack key guitar) came as a child,
when he was inspired by Gabby Pahinui while watching him perform at a lu’au in
Kohala. Sonny’s biggest inspiration and influence came at age 12 from a well
known slack key guitarist and family friend, Uncle Fred Punahoa. Punahoa took a
keen interest in Sonny’s playing, and spent several weeks living with the Lim
family in Kohala in order to teach him. Sonny’s professional career started as a
teenager when he commuted to Oahu to perform with the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau.
Over the past two decades Sonny has performed with virtually every ‘name’
musician in Hawaii. He is a multiple Hoku award winner, performs regularly with
his family in Hawaii and Japan, and has received recent acclaim for his
performance on Hawaii’s first GRAMMY CD, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (Palm
Records). This is Sonny’s first solo CD.

Raiatea Helm Sweet and

Grammy Nominated
The accolades for vocalist Raiatea
Helm have been piling up every year since she burst on the Island music scene
with her 2002 debut album, "Far Away Heaven." But 2006 could be the biggest yet
for the 21-year-old Moloka'i native.
The only musician in this year's crop of best Hawaiian music album Grammy
nominees with an all-vocal recording, Helm is also the only female artist up for
the award. Standing out from the other nominated albums might give Helm a chance
of winning the golden gramophone in Los Angeles on Feb. 8.

"Ukulele Jazz" by Benny
Chong
(Music Ben Productions)
Benny Chong has been known for more than 40 years as the guitarist who helped
make DON HO & THE ALI'IS one of the biggest acts in Contemporary Hawaiian Music
Scene.
It has only been in the last few years that Chong has stepped forward as an
ukulele virtuoso -- although his solo recordings have only been on a compilation
album. This is his long-awaited debut as a solo artist. Benny Chong proves worth
the wait.
LISTEN TO HAPPY TALK
LISTEN TO Ka Wailele O' Nuuanu
LISTEN
Benny's website
The selections are a mix of jazz standards and songs that Chong feels lend
themselves to jazz arrangements. The opener, "Happy Talk," sets the mood as
Chong teams up with Nathan Aweau for the first of five ensemble numbers. The
group concept and retro '80s-style arrangements work well in positioning Chong
as a jazz artist. Six solo recordings give ukulele aficionados a better
opportunity to appreciate the intricacies of his technique. Chong's decision to
record "Ka Wailele O' Nuuanu" first as an ensemble piece and then solo allows
comparisons to be made.
Benny taught himself to play the 'ukulele when he was about 11 years old. After
nine years or so, he virtually put the 'ukulele away for some thirty-five years.
In 1964, he was the guitarist with the Ali'is, the band that backed up Don Ho.
In 2000, he's one of the four artists in
"The Art of Solo 'Ukulele", a concert series that led to a CD and a public TV
special. Benny's jazz roots come through in his playing.

KAUMAKAIWA (LOPAKA) KANAKA'OLE - WELO
HOKU
WINNING ALBUM
It's time for the voice of
Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Kaumakaiwa (Lopaka) Kanaka'ole to rise and speak
of today's young Hawaiian people. "Welo" honors the ancestors of the past but
most definitely has today's sound. Kaumakaiwa (Lopaka) Kanaka'ole turns 13
original new songs into the most interesting album to come out of Hawai'i this
year. His creative touch blends music and chant with extraordinary new
interpretations that include the sounds of a cello, snare drum and harmonica
blended with ancient musical implements of Hawai'i. He is joined by special
guests Robert Cazimero, Kekuhi Kanahele and Napua Greig. If you want to hear
what the future of Hawaiian music holds, this CD will point you in the right
direction.

“Talent: a natural or acquired
ability.” Kaumakaiwa “Lopaka” Kanaka`ole possesses both, naturally: through is
great grandmother Edith Kanaka`ole, his grandmother Pualani Kanahele, and his
mother, Kekuhi Kanahele. With this lineage and his continual thirst for
knowledge Lopaka is blossoming into an individual worthy of carrying and
expanding the Kanaka`ole traditions and values.
“Kaumakaiwa is loyal to his family and the traditions they embrace. He is the
oldest grandchild in both his mother and father’s families who takes his ‘hiapo’
responsibilities very seriously. He is the youngest choreographer with Halau o
Kekuhi and challenges himself to understand the metaphor, the symbols, the place
names, the cultural innuendo and other complexities of Hawaiian chant. Although
his taste is eclectic, when he sings or chants Hawaiian compositions, an
aperture opens and that soul from the dim past presents itself in Kaumakaiwa.”

Expressing myself through music for
the past 15 years has been a great joy for me. Working with gifted musicians
along the way has taken me on an emotional roller coaster ride. It has opened my
eyes to each person's heart and soul.
I have been performing with Keoki Kahumoku for 10 years. Never have I been
around a person with so much love and feeling for Hawaiian music. For that, I
thank Keoki for always being true to himself and his art. Through our
friendship, we have become like the brothers we never had. For everyone that
requested a new recording... here it is! One more time - "Hana Hou" for all of

"THE HAWAI'I CLASSIC SERIES, VOL. I/VINTAGE" BY NATHAN AWEAU
LISTEN

• Hapa-haole music.
• This looks like a nostalgic compilation of golden oldies.
However this newly recorded compilation features the subtle voice of Nathan Aweau, who otherwise
performs as a member of Hapa.
Aweau, a former Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, has lovingly arranged classic
Island favorites with a stroll-down-memory-lane and makes it work: "Blue
Hawai'i," "Lahainaluna," "Honolulu City Lights," "Hawaiian Lullaby," "Lovely
Hula Hands" and "Beyond the Reef" speak of earlier times, with simple
arrangements.
This, the first of four CDs that comprise the "Classic" series, and future
releases will be recognized for preserving and retaining the flavor of the
original songs.
Our take: This is a departure for Aweau, and a delight for those who favor
hapa-haole selections.
"SLACK KEY JAZZ" BY JEFF PETERSON
featured artist of Grammy Award winning CD "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2". He
has
performed with such musical legends as Eric Clapton, James Galway, Michael
Feinstein as well as Hawaiian greats Ledward Kaapana, and the Honolulu
Symphony.Brilliant slack-key with jazz infusion; Ki ho'alu or slack-key guitar,
a favored form of Island music. Grammy-winning Jeff Peterson playing jazz mixed
with local-style guitar.
Ki ho'alu, jazz, world music.
As a member of the Grammy Award-winning ki ho'alu artists from Hawai'i, Jeff
Peterson is emerging as one of the leaders of the movement to expand the appeal
of slack-key guitar. 16 songs that Peterson lets his fingers do all the talking
as he shares his passion for several genres: jazz, Hawaiian and, naturally,
slack-key guitar. Unmistakably jazz on "Take Five" and "Don't Get Around Much
Anymore," his jazz takes on a Latin flavor on "The Girl From Ipanema." Hawaiian
influences penetrate "Pua Lilia" and "Wahine Hololio." There is hapa-haole with
a jazz slack-key coloration on "Blue Hawai'i" and "Sophisticated Hula." Mid
range Focus is on such standards as "Paper Moon" and "Blue Skies." Easily one of
the best cuts is his smooth and seductive take on "Don't Know Why," the Norah
Jones signature. Peterson displays creativity on originals as "Broke Da Mouth"
and "Makena," clear endorsement of his place in Island living. What this disc
shows is how accessible slack-key guitar can be — romantic, reflective, emotive,
hypnotic. The sound is studio-crisp; the packaging classy and hip.
A real contender in multiple realms: jazz, guitar, dinner music, dancing, or
just plain listening.

"Kiho'alu" Ledward Kaapana '06 Grammys
NOMINEE
Kiho'alu meaning loosen the keys.
Any new recording by Led Kaapana is a welcome addition to his discography. Even
when Kaapana records a song he's done before, there will likely be something
different in the new version.
Hard-core slack key experts can listen for new variations or techniques here.
All others will enjoy the soothing beauty of his playing. The selections include
Hawaiian standards, pop and country hits, and several originals. Kaapana
switches from guitar to 'ukulele for smooth renditions of "Killing Me Softly"
and "Love Is Blue." The two change-of-pace songs fit in nicely too.

"Hear..." Brittni Paiva (Talmidim Productions)
Brittni Paiva's first album, "Brittni X 3," was a home-brewed solo project that
won her a Hoku Award. She worked with Wendell Ching in a conventional studio for
this one, and it's a fine showcase of her versatility as a musician.
Multi-tracking allows Paiva to interpret "Opihi Moemoe" with guitar and bass, "Kani
Ki Ho'alu" with guitar only, and "Akaka Falls" with guitar and ukulele. She
plays all three instruments on "Lahaina Luna," featuring first the uke and then
the guitar while using the bass to provide a solid foundation. On "E Lohea Mai,"
she sings too. This variety makes the album much more interesting that it would
be if she played all three instruments on every track. Ching sits in on drums to
reinforce the rhythm section on "Ukulele Boogie," an original that could easily
become her signature as a ukulele player. He also joins Paiva on her reworking
of "Take Five," but they wisely avoid the temptation to add synthetic strings or
other sonic filler. Count on Paiva to be a Hoku Awards contender again in 2006.

LISTEN TO "WHY"

Daniel Ho's latest instrumental album Koaloha
is one of his best. KoAloha, in Hawaiian, means "your love." This album is
dedicated to the Okami Family and staff of KoAloha 'Ukulele. He does an
excellent job interpreting 12 contemporary Hawaiian and local pop songs. While
some of them have previously been done at least a number of times in recent
years, others like "For You I'd Chase a Rainbow" have not been redone since the
original hit. "Wahine 'Ilikea" is one of the former, but Ho comes up with fresh
ideas, while remaining faithful to the original melody.
The concept behind the album is that this is Ho's first recording using his
custom-made KoAloha D-VI 6-string ukulele. Two added strings give the D-VI a
bass sound as those of a guitar, allowing Ho
to play in a style similar to conventional ki ho'alu guitar. Over the course of
a decade, Daniel Ho has produced, arranged, composed, and/or performed on 34
records ranging from pop, to smooth jazz, to contemporary Hawaiian music. As the
former leader of Kilauea, Daniel released six best selling smooth jazz albums
reviewed as "some of the finest, most popular and melodic contemporary jazz
music available." Three records reached Billboard's top ten, two hit number one
on the national airplay charts, and all placed in the top five. the top five.

"LEI PULAMAHIA" BY HO'OKENA
LISTEN Traditional
Hawaiian
Ho’okena got started in 1986 (with 9 cds to date)
With 2006 marking Ho'okena's 20th anniversary, the group begins the celebration
with a release of staples that recall a glorious past. “Lei Pulamahia”
represents treasured songs that Ho‘okena has recorded over the years. Whether
for places, people, events or emotions, these musical “lei” are worn with pride
and shared with much aloha. Meticulous remixes, each with homage paid to the
roots of Hawaiiana, make this one a textbook standard. Ho'okena diehards will
pick up on the contributions of Manu Boyd, Horace K. Dudoit III, Chris Kamaka
and Glen H.K. Smith. "Ho'okena," " 'Ala Pikake," "Ia 'Oe e ka La" and "Kaua'i
Beauty" are particularly joyful, and the bilingual "The Prayer," with Maila
Gibson guest-singing (with Puakea Nogelmeier translating), gets a stamp of
approval. While the liner notes are skimpy, you get some notable tidbits. Like:
Boyd penned "Lei 'Ola'a" on a paper plate at Ala Moana Park during a spectacular
sunset.

Natalie Ai Kamauu's first solo release "'E," has arrived. A true labor of love,
with husband, Iolani, on vocals and instrumentation, "'E" is a perfect, genuine
debut for this stellar vocalist. Even more impressive, she's a songwriter.
Natalie's voice dances playfully and soars effortlessly, weaving in and out of
the guitar, bass, ukulele, and piano. It's a voice that penetrates straight to
the heart and moves the soul. Already a sought after performer, "'E" is sure to
secure her place among Hawaii's most beloved female artists. At the very first
note, Natalie will command your attention, just as she always has.
Surprised that this disc hasn’t created more of a
stir in the Hawaiian music community yet – but I suspect it will show growth in
attention over a long time (it will have “legs,” as they say.) Kamauu was
singing with her father Howard Ai’s halau back when she was a teenager; years
later, she won the Miss Aloha Hula title at Merrie Monarch; now, she has finally
released her first solo album, ably backed up by the musical talents of her
husband (and former KCCN dj), Iolani, as well as members of her family and
several other talented friends.
Not only a fine singer, but an excellent songwriter – she has four originals on
the recording. There are also several traditional selections, as well as a
gently jazz-inflected take on Don (“American Pie,” “Vincent”) McLean’s “And I
Love You So,” featuring piano (and a hint of bass) to back her up; This is
one of those albums that you should pick up, even though you are not
familiar with the artist – take a chance on someone unfamiliar to you, and I am
sure you will be pleased.
We'll be hearing more from Natalie shortly.

"Pineapple Hits"
By Various artists

Released 'O5
Review: This is a cheaply packaged recycling project. Producer George J.D. Chun
wastes plenty of liner space on a history of the pineapple in Hawaii, but
provides nothing of substance on the music or the artists who recorded it. Chun
mentions that the songs and/or the artists have received 57 Hoku awards, but
doesn't say which ones they are.

Johnson's Soundtrack for 'Curious George' No.
1

How does Jack Johnson's chart performance stack up against other
Hawai'i-connected musicians?
Martin Denny: Late bandleader's "Exotica" album was No. 1 on Billboard's
monophonic chart in 1959.
Kingston Trio: Members Dave Guard and Bob Shane were born in Hawai'i and began
singing together at Punahou School. The group formed in San Francisco and had
three No. 1 albums during 1958-60.
Bette Midler: The Honolulu-reared singer's highest charting album was the
soundtrack from the film "Beaches," which peaked at No. 2 in June 1989. Midler
has had several CDs in the Top 10, but has never topped the chart. The
Grammy-winning single "Wind Beneath My Wings" from "Beaches" gave Midler her
second of three Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles.
Don Ho: His "Tiny Bubbles" album peaked at No. 15 on Billboard's album chart in
1967. The title track climbed as high as No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Yvonne Elliman: The Honolulu-born vocalist hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100
singles chart with "If I Can't Have You," from the soundtrack for "Saturday
Night Fever." That album spent 24 weeks at No. 1 in 1978. Elliman charted three
albums on the Billboard Top 200 between 1977 and 1979; 1978's "Night Flight" was
the highest-charting of the trio, peaking at No. 40.
Glenn Medeiros: A self-titled album by the Kaua'i-raised singer climbed to No.
82 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in 1990. A single from the album, "She Ain't
Worth It" with a then very hot Bobby Brown, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Keali'i Reichel: His "E O Mai" peaked at No. 189 on the Billboard 200 in 1997.
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole: The posthumous 2001 CD "Alone in IZ World" climbed as
high as No. 135 on the album chart.
Jack Johnson's soundtrack for the film "Curious George" will make history today
when it debuts at No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Top 200 albums and rock albums
charts.
It's the first CD by a Hawai'i musician to reach, let alone debut at, the top of
the magazine's lead album chart, as well as a first No. 1 CD for Johnson.
Johnson's No. 1 on the magazine's new rock albums chart also is a first for a
Hawai'i musician. Johnson's spot at the top can be chalked up to his appeal as
well as to the relative weakness of his competition. Barry Manilow's "The
Greatest Songs of the Fifties" debuted at No. 1 last week and falls to No. 3
today. Johnson also bests Mary J. Blige's "The Breakthrough," on the charts for
eight weeks, and now at No. 2.
"Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film 'Curious George,' credited to Jack
Johnson and Friends, sold 163,000 copies in its first week of national release,
according to Nielsen SoundScan. It was released Feb. 7.
Johnson's last CD of original material, 2005's "In Between Dreams," sold 229,000
copies in its debut week — more than "George." But "In Between Dreams" was up
against 50 Cent's "The Massacre," which sold 1.14 million copies in its first
week to debut at No. 1, and Jennifer Lopez's "Rebirth," debuting at No. 2 with
261,000 copies sold. "Dreams" was No. 3 in its first week.
"We're really stoked for Jack. He's a great guy, and it's great to see good
things happen to a good person,"
Star 101.9 FM was one of the first Honolulu radio stations to often play
Johnson's early hits "Flake" and "Bubble Toes" in 2002. Tracks from "In Between
Dreams" made Johnson the station's No. 2 most-requested artist for 2005, behind
only Green Day.
"Upside Down," the first single off the "Curious George" soundtrack, is
currently Star 101.9's No. 1 track.
"'Curious George' is a great kids movie. And Jack's music was perfect for it,"
said Hyatt. "He's a really good songwriter. And he's an artist with a
conscience, which is a great thing to see."
