SUGAR BOWL FOR CHRISTMAS
~THE HEART OF A WARRIOR~
A HENRY KAPONO MP3
Play Kapono's Song Dedicated to the University of Hawaii Warriors

Sugar Bowl... that was my ultimate Christmas present this year other than my beautiful twins and my beautiful wife. Christmas was the best ever! I hope all of you had a fantastic Christmas! You know my twins Kapono & Cassandra took Christmas like it was just another day. To them everyday is Christmas. What a concept to embrace. They had a great time because our entire family got together, their Sisters ( my oldest daughters Momi & Kaleo), Grandma and Grandpa, Aunts & Uncles, their Nephew, Cousins and Friends. I must say it was a great family year. Everybody was happy. That's the greatest gift. Thank you and Happy Birthday!
Sugar Bowl... THE WARRIOR NATION! this past year has been such a great UH football year. Exciting and inspiring. Colt Brennan is an amazing leader, humble, grateful, loyal and team oriented. The whole team as a unit... WOW! I've been a big fan since June Jones took over and I've watched him build the UH football program into what it is today. He's an amazing man in so many ways. He has inspired me to write songs for the team that he proudly plays for them. The first time we got together he asked me to play for the team as a pre-game treat for the guys. I wrote a song call, "The Warrior" He plays it every game at pre-game warm ups as well as a compilation of other songs of mine. He had told me about it and I have never had the chance to get to the game early enough with traffic and all until the last game with Washington. I was blown away. Every song played was mine. I felt so honored and proud... Wow! He's a fan, but I didn't know how much of one. Thanks June. Well this season was so inspiring that I had to write another song. The sequel to "The Warrior song." This one is called "The Heart of a Warrior", (Thanks to my good friend and recording engineer Gaylord Holomalia for being there at a minutes notice) I have been so inspired by the Warrior games and their undefeated season and the frenzy they have caused in the State of Hawaii. The concept of the song was trying to envision the greatest game ever on this planet. To motivate, inspire and empower them to realize who they are, what they have accomplished and the greatness that the future holds for them. Anyway, I got it to June the day before they left for New Orleans and he was blown away. He plans to play it for the guys throughout the week leading up to the big game. To be honest the song blew me away to because it came to me with such an awEsome power. Anyway, if I'm getting to deep
forgive me. I get so possessed when these things happen.

To add to this I just finished a music video of a song called, "Ekolu Mea Nui." A Wild Hawaiian song not on the CD, but to be a special feature on the DVD expected to be released in the spring or summer. The translation to the song is the three most important things in life are Hope, Faith and Love. Love being the most important or the best. It's one of those songs that was a filler for the Wild Hawaiian tour and turned out to be a one take phenomenon. Phenomenon because it rocks so unexpectedly. Anyway, I gave June a copy and he flipped and said it was so powerful and so inspiring. That's what I wanted to accomplish with the video -- thanks to Andrew Magpoc a fantastic editor living here in paradise, he brought it to life! It's amazing. Check my website for a possible sneak peek some time in 2008. Well with all that said, please I just hope it moves people to realize the power of love. Jimi Hendrix says it the best, "When the Power of Love overcomes the Love of Power. The World will know Peace". The video opens with that quote. Well, it's been an exciting week and it's only going to get better. My family is all excited about going to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl and so is the band. We'll be performing at the Hawaiian Cajun Bash for New Years Eve. It's another amazing story, but maybe another time. If you're there check out the party we're gonna rock the place and rock in the New Year. The bash is a fund raiser for the University of Hawaii Na Koa football club as well as for the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity. Go online www.hawaiiancajunbash.com
SOLD OUT!!
and check it out for more info. To all of you all I ask is that you send your positive vibrations to the UH Warriors and check the game out from where ever you 're. Thanks and have a GREAT 2008! It's gonna be BIG!!!  Henry Kapono

Back To Romance

C&K on a new compilation CD "Back To Romance"
Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawai'i
(Mountain Apple Company)

On the heels of one of the best selling CD's of 2006 comes Back to Romance, a rare all-male recording of Hawai`i's leading men with the lush orchestrations of the Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawai`i. Back to Romance represents a true expression of a man in love. From Robert Cazimero's dreamy rendition of "I Only Have Eyes For You" to Fiji's R&B touch on Paul & Linda McCartney's "My Love," each song was handpicked by the artists. What are men's most intimate thoughts of romance? With passion in their hearts and love on their minds, Hawai`i's premiere male recording artists and the Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawai`i answer that question with Back to Romance

(Cecilio and Kapono go back to their Rainbow Villa days with a familiar take on "We're All Alone" and Kapono appears with Catingub as his singing partner on "Oh, Pretty Woman." The C&K cut is the least adventurous, while "Oh, Pretty Woman" is Catingub's biggest gamble in terms of reworking a Top 40 classic into orchestral pop)

 "as for Seattle...hopefully next summer."

Says Henry

I first met Henry Kapono on the stage at Dukes, in our first meeting, I saw that the man was soft-spoken, with a gentle spirit with an intriguing new way of touching his audience. The audience attending ranged from teenagers to gray haired, and even on wheel chair bound, all of which were enjoying the entertainment, some showing up regularly. Although subtle and scarce the rugged smile would appear whenever eye contact was made. I highly recommend your Sunday afternoons be spent listening to yet another of Hawaii’s finest singers, seaside at Dukes. My second meeting with Kapono was during a visit to Disney's California Adventure, walking along the amusements but not failing to recognize a fan~ me, by name, again that smile.

HENRY KAPONO KA'AIHUE, is of pure Hawaiian decent. He was born and raised on the island of Oahu in the small town of Kapahulu, located just outside Waikiki. Christened Kapono by his mother, it is the Hawaiian word for righteous. His family surroundings provided the early musical influence that directed him into his present career. He is a humanitarian, a prolific award winning songwriter, an accomplished actor and has produced numerous albums, video works and concerts.
Henry started singing in a choir. The first instrument he learned to play was the ukulele, followed by the acoustic guitar, which he learned to play by listening to the radio and records. His natural athletic abilities earned him full scholarships to the highly regarded
Punahou Academy in Honolulu and later, the University of Hawaii. He began his professional career as a young solo performer, singing and playing the guitar in a small folk club in Waikiki. This led to a short stint playing rock with a local island group called Pakalolo. The group played the islands and toured the far-east, where he chose to spend the next two years in Vietnam entertaining the troops. This experience profoundly affected his music, his appreciation of life and his love of all people.
Upon returning to Hawaii, Kapono (as he likes being called) began an eight year collaboration with Cecilio Rodriguez, forming the duo of CECILIO & KAPONO. Blending together their distinctive and individual talents, they gave contemporary and folk rock a new perspective. Within eight months Cecilio & Kapono had a three album recording contract with Columbia Records. "C&K" recorded eight albums together.  Continually evolving, Kapono returned to his solo career in 1981 with the release of Kapono - Stand in the Light, and then created an incredibly broad range of musical expressions through 12 solo albums to date.

His repertoire of twenty-one albums resonate with many musical influences--Bob Marley, Loggins and Messina, Eric Clapton, and the Eagles can be detected in a musical phrase here, an intonation there, and an emphasis somewhere else. A collection of "feel good" original compositions.  But the resulting musical tapestry is a unique blend of aloha with soul, set to island rhythms and is exclusively Kapono's. Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Dancing in the Moonlight" evoked a new meaning and catapulted Kapono right to the North Shore. This gentle, powerful musician transcends his Hawaiian heritage through his music. It is infused with his love for Hawaii
Henry Kapono Ka'aihue, the man and the artist, is quintessentially Hawaiian. The gentle, powerful yet shy man embodies
the spirit of aloha. Kapono's music transcends his Hawaiian heritage which he loves so much. He has the gift that most great artists share: the ability to enable us to gaze upon their painting or ponder their work or listen to their music - and find new meaning and purpose in our own lives.   Kapono touches the soul with the simple honesty of his lyrics and music, and the gift of an evocative, plaintive balladeer's voice that haunts you long after he leaves the stage. Kapono's sense of pride is strong as he passionately sings "Home in the Islands (2000)", a song he wrote at the request of the Hawaii Millennium Commission. It is featured on his album Evolution of Poi.    In addition A Beautiful Hawaiian Day is his first published children’s book.

The C & K story began under a starry night on Oahu ’s North Shore in February 1973. While on a break from touring with “Little Anthony and the Imperials,” Cecilio Rodriguez flew to Hawaii to meet Henry Kapono who had a very similar style to his own and with whom, it was thought, he could form a group. All the components were there: breathing, intonation, blend, and their own individual guitar styles, each complementing the other in a magical way. At that moment, the duo, “Cecilio & Kapono,” was born. They went on to become one of the top duos to come out of Hawaii . It was only a matter of time before they came to the attention of Columbia Records and were soon signed to a multi-album deal. They recorded albums entitled, Cecilio & Kapono, Elua, and The Nightmusic, all of which became top-selling albums. Their third album alone garnered five prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Awards

Cecilio Rodriguez was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California where he received the majority of his musical education. After forming a band and performing during high school and college, Cecilio moved to Los Angeles to advance his musical career. There, he had a fateful meeting with Anthony Gourdine of “Little Anthony and the Imperials,” and soon after was traveling with them as their guitarist and musical director. It soon became apparent to Anthony that Cecilio was much more than a guitarist on stage, and so began a long line of performances as the opening act for “Little Anthony and the Imperials.” Cecilio has made a mark of his own as a charming, personable and talented performer who can take you from laughter with his great sense of humor, to tears with his beautiful love songs. Cecilio has two solo CD releases to his credit: Maybe Tonight released in 1983 and Storybook, Then …and Now released in 1995.

Today, the C & K story lives on and has truly become a “Lifetime Party” as they kicked-off the 30 Years of Friends celebration with three back to back sold out concerts at Kapono’s at Aloha Tower Marketplace, which were recorded live for this CD.

All pau for Kapono's

When the clock on Aloha Tower struck 2 on the first morning of 2006, Henry Kapono Ka'aihue was ready to say goodbye to Kapono's.
Kapono dimmed the lights of its picturesque pier-side stage for the last time after a New Year's Eve multi-act concert dubbed "Kapono's Final Hour at the Tower."

Post-Kapono's, the singer/songwriter/musician finished recording his first CD of original material since 2000's "Evolution of Poi."
"I've been working on it in between (running) Kapono's," said Ka'aihue of the CD, currently titled "The Wild Hawaiian." "It's very different and something I've always wanted to do. It'll probably revolutionize the way Hawaiian music is played and listened to.
"It's definitely very powerful and very Hawaiian. I call it alternative Hawaiian music."
Slated for an early summer release of '06, the recording will also be Ka'aihue's first without any English lyrics. "It's all Hawaiian," Ka'aihue said proudly, before pausing and offering some caution. "It really rocks, though." He laughed hard.
Over its brief existence, Kapono's prided itself as a haven for live music, hosting diverse concerts by national and international acts and giving dozens of local musicians of all genres one of the best outdoor stages in town to play.
"We've had such great moments ... and that's what I'm going to miss," said Ka'aihue. "That stage has got a lot of magic on it."

The party of a 'Lifetime' C&K  celebrate their 30 years together

To commemorate their three decades together, C&K released "Lifetime Party -- 30 Years of Friends" in December 2003. It was sold out before its release. Next came the DVD, with interactive entertainment, that sold well, too. Now, C&K is releasing "Lifetime Party, Volume 2."
