HAPA IS BACK AGAIN, DESERVEDLY SO..

Revised and revived, Hapa is happening

"Maui"

Hapa; Self-Distributed

No, this doesn't mean Kelly's Kaneali'i and Barry Flanagan have gotten back together. Flanagan and his new partner, Nathan Aweau, have boldly defined a fresh and free-wheeling cosmopolitan sound while remaining firmly in touch with their island roots. A zesty rendition of "Haleakala" opens the album and sells the new duo in no time. "Twinkletoes" showcases Aweau's strength on bass, "Slacking Off" gives Flanagan the instrumental spotlight, and "Papa E" juxtaposes Tokelauan lyrics with an African world music vibe. "Kealoha Bebop w/Charlie" is their biggest leap forward into post-modern Hawaiian music, as Charles Kaupu and Kealoha join them in adding slam poetry, chant and alternative rock to this impressive collection.

HAPA'S NEWEST RELEASE It's a Slack Key World

Nathan Aweau and I have wanted to do an all-instrumental album for some time now, and we are quite pleased with this project. We invited some of our good friends to play along with us...Ernie Cruz, Jr., Imua Garza, Gaylord Holomalia, Orama Brault, Shawn Ishimoto, Pat Simmons (from the Doobie Brothers) and Pat Simmons, Jr. What started out as a Hapa CD turned into a spectacular collaboration between Hapa and these great talents.

"It's a Slack Key World Compilation" honors the Spanish cowboys (vequeros) who were responsible for bringing the first guitars to Hawai‘i in the 1800's

From THEIR COLLECTION

HAPA - MAUI
"If this was a book you'd want it on your coffee table," quipped Aweau. "We decided to make a CD that was a total experience. One that transported you and that you could experience on many levels. This is good music but it's much more, it's art, mythology, history, philosophy and hopefully so much more in what the listener will bring to it."  Clips at top of page.

Their new DVD, "Na Mele: Hapa

Maui," is out, Narated by actor Peter Fonda, for a PBS Hawai'i taping of a "Na Mele" show featuring Hapa, available only at PBS Hawaii. Fonda is a long-time fan of Hapa shot live at the PBS studio this year, the DVD gets a general release next month. We especially like the cover art by Wai'anae boy Solomon Enos. To get a copy now, call PBS Hawaii at 973-1187.  Or attend one of HAPA's concerts.

"Namahana", Release Date: June 22, '99  HAPA once again shows why they have been called the most imaginative and ambitious music group in Hawaii.  Barry Flanagan has been widely regarded as one of the true innovators in contemporary world music, and on Namahana, he and partner Kelii Kanealii do not disappoint.  Sensuous symphonic overlays, ullian pipe and tin whistle mesh with deft guitar work and soaring vocals -- This is the CD to put on after a hard day's work. It's so soothing…. As the music of Hapa developed, Keli`i and Barry found their that harmonies were extraordinary and their music became legendary. This album shows the maturity that they both possess and combines both originals and classics for the listener. The mix of soft ballads and soft instrumentals -- some originals, some not this is HAPA at their shining best!

"THE HAWAI'I CLASSIC SERIES, VOL. I/VINTAGE" BY NATHAN AWEAU

LISTEN
The first of a projected four volumes to be released over the course of a year, singer and multi-instrumentalist Aweau tackles a set of eleven hapa-haole songs.

• Hapa-haole music.
• At first glance, this looks like a nostalgic compilation of golden oldies. However this newly recorded compilation features the subtle and sweetly territorial voice of Nathan Aweau, who otherwise thrives as a member of Hapa. Aweau, a former Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, has lovingly arranged classic Island favorites with a stroll-down-memory-lane posture and makes it work: "Blue Hawai'i," "Lahainaluna," "Honolulu City Lights," "Hawaiian Lullaby," "Lovely Hula Hands" and "Beyond the Reef" speak of earlier times, with simple arrangements and no-frills eloquence.
This, the first of four CDs that comprise the "Classic" series, and future releases will be recognized for preserving and retaining the flavor of the original songs.
Our take: This is a departure for Aweau, and a delight for those who favor hapa-haole selections.
"Blue Hawai'i," "Lahainaluna," "Honolulu City Lights," "Hawaiian Lullaby," "Lovely Hula Hands" and "Beyond the Reef"  “Tiny Bubbles,”and “Sweet Leilani,” to more recent entries into the standards folder, such as “Hawaiian Lullaby” and “Honolulu City Lights.” (Note: he has recorded this arrangement of “A Maile Lei” previously.)

Tahiti Manahune -         Hi Lea, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!  Keeping your fingers crossed worked!  Barry contacted us and translated the song.  We learned our dance and performed it at our annual recital.  We will be attending the HAPA concert next month in Whittier and will meet him to present a copy of our dance. It was down to the wire!  By the time we were able to get the lyrics and our create the dance, we had 4 hours to learn it before our show!  WHEW!  We somehow pulled it off!

AGAIN, thank you very much for your suggestion to contact Barry directly.
Aloha,  Dawn

I am a dancer with a community group in Temecula, California called Vylani's Polynesian Dancers.  Our class schedule runs from February to November.  During that time we perform at various community events, schools and Senior Centers.  Our dances are taught by Aileen Manalili.  Every November we showcase our dances at a annual recital for the community and our family.  Some time mid Sept we were still needing to learn a new Aprima for our recital.  Our instructor found the song she liked . . Tahiti Manahune by HAPA.  The problem was we were unable to translate the song in order to choreograph the dance.  Time is running out.  Our ability to translate the lyrics to the English language are  . . .well . . non-existent and we did not have a resource handy.  We need to learn the dance and practice it before our recital.  We were now on a mission to have someone help translate the lyrics for us.   We searched the internet for lyrics, but the album was to new.  We looked to -on-line dictionaries with no success.  We contacted a Culture Center, and never received a response. I even went as far to contact a radio station in the Islands, but no luck. We were started to feel deflated in our efforts and started to think we would have to use a Aprima that was done before.  During our search I came across a fan website for Danny Couch with links to HAPA.  I decided to try my luck again. Lea Cook the webmaster and fan emailed me back and suggested I contact HAPA directly.  WHAT . . . could it be that easy?  Would HAPA respond? Would we get the translation in time to learn the dance?   Lea was gracious enough to provide me with an email for Barry and a note saying to drop her name.  So we waited for a response and kept our fingers crossed.  The clock was speeding up and we started practicing last years Aprima . . UNTIL . . . 2 weeks later I received an email directly from Barry!  He was happy to help us!  With his busy schedule, now we just had to wait for Barry to send us the translation. . . . We received the translation about 5 days before the recital.  Our instructor still needed to choreograph the dance and teach us 20 dancers.  Well . . .we are now down to only 3 days before the recital . .we didn't think it would happen.  Then at practice on Thursday Nov 3rd in only 2 hours, we learned our Aprima!!  The next day we held another 2 hour practice.   Saturday was our day to finish up costumes and Sunday the 6th was our big day.  Some how we pulled it off!  With very little practice and plenty of stress, the Aprima was the crowd favorite during the recital!  We looked great and had a blast performing the song.

We were very honored that Barry would have taken time to help translate the song for us.  It meant a lot to us and are very grateful to HAPA for their support.

Aloha Barry,

I am a dancer with a community rec. center group in Riverside, California.  Lea Cook at Danny Couch Fanaddicts recommended that I contact you directly to see if you can help.  We fell in love with the song Tahiti Manahune and would like to choreograph our aparima dance to the song.  We have purchased the cd and have the lyrics to the song, however we are sorry to say our ability to translate the lyrics to the English language are  . . .well . . non-existent.  I do not know a resource for translation.

Obviously in order for us to choreograph the dance we must understand the lyrics.  We would be honored if you would be willing to help us on our request and provide the English translation to Tahiti Manahune.

Mahalo nui loa Dawn Thompsom

Our instructor, myself and another dancer Salina, will be attending the HAPA concert in Whittier in December.  Barry told us to be sure to introduce ourselves to him while we are there.  In addition, we will be presenting him a copy of our recital DVD for his viewing.

Mahalo to Lea for her help!!!  Dawn Thompson

Dawn,  I am so thrilled for you. I actually have goodbumps.. (chicken skin)  Bless Barry’s heart for giving you the lyrics to the song. He really is a very nice and thoughtful man.  I would like to add your photo to our HAPA pages with your permission along with a story about it..

Again Congratulation with your production..
