Welcome to the Pacific Northwest. To those who are from Paradise it's a bit of a shock to the system! (cold)
Oct 23, Danny performed at a private convention in Portland Oregon, he sang Opera! Then he took the time and made a special effort to make the trek north to Tacoma Washington to spend some time with some very special friends from around the Seattle area. How many celebs do you know that would do that? Those friends included Mildred Bergman, our featured Romance Novelist from Federal Way, Ed and Madonna Arnold from Tacoma, and myself (Lea Cook webmistress) from the Gig Harbor area.
Joining Danny in his trip north were long time friends Meta and Ace Crawford formerly of Honolulu, and Joanne and Walter Sharp from Portland Oregon (Danny had dedicated his CD "Something To Remember" to Joanne and Walter, in memory of Joanne's father Herbert Judd.) Time was spent enjoying each-other's company, laughing and talking story about current and past events. Danny was filled with stories, the latest being about his recent High School Reunion from Nanakuli High. He ended up singing eight selections for that audience. AND met up with his friends who attended the bowling day during the Hoku Awards. (if any of you are reading this.. PLEASE contact me!) Danny said the best part was seeing his band teacher Clarence Owia, (originally mentioned on our Olapa Kua Interview as Danny flashed back saying "I really played drums the first time when I was in the 4th or 5th grade. I was honored by my band teacher stopping the music and saying "I want you all to listen to this guy, he’s going to be a star." At the time it meant nothing to me, I was in 5th grade. As time went along and I got older, I realized it was a great compliment, thank god I didn’t understand it then, I would have been so terrified. First song I played on drums literally was The Theme Song From Charlie Brown. (Sang and demonstrated) That was THE first song ever." The first song I ever sang in my life was Super Cali Fraga Listic Expi Ali Doshias. (Breaks into laughter) As far as performance wise and my teacher, Clarence Owia didn’t want anyone else to sing that but me.") This special teacher Clarence Owia, so influential in Danny's career, who stayed till the end of the reunion, awaiting Danny's performance was indeed correct in his assumption "He's a Star!"
Danny also spoke about his visit to Japan and China, and getting to see his 25 minute full version "These Island" commercial again on TV, thrilled about the size of the audience viewing it.
Danny was handsome as ever dressed in a Naru-type jacket
(very flattering for his stature) and donning the biggest and most sincere smile
imaginable. He told me he would bring a bit of Hawaii with him and indeed he did
with that smile. Although Danny was a bit "nippy" we did manage to arrange some
sun breaks for him, or did he bring them with him? Each one of us knowing we were blessed with special friendships,
this weekend certainly was the time to enjoy and cherish that. It was a very special weekend
as it was also honoring the passing of Mildred's beloved husband, Lee. Her
inspiration and love of 59 years as well as dance partner thru life. This
extraordinary couple touched many with their elegance and love for others.
Having Danny at her side was quite soothing for her, as Danny was a very close
friend of Lee's. The
place chosen for lunch was The Elk's Club in Tacoma. A place Danny had ventured
to with Mildred and Lee on occasion and held special memories for all, the last time visiting the Seattle area for
Danny being four years ago
to the day.
It was wonderful having the opportunity of seeing and exchanging hugs with
Danny and company, right here in our neck of the woods. We're looking forward to the next
time with much Aloha.
Lea, You've conveyed
our warmth and affection in our Saturday group. In the picture, I was laughing
the most at what Danny said, but it's nice to see us all together, except you
should have been in there, too. Can you add the Danny and you picture that would
complete the story. You are what's drawing so many people together in sharing a
common interest of Fanaddicts.
Aloha. Mildred
~ Mahalo Danny for the special visit, it was very memorable! ~
