Written by Irving Berlin
Sung with Danny Couch's Special Touch
Irving Berlin, who died at 101, actually outlived the copyright on many of his own songs. But while his copyrights were lost to the public domain, his songs already migrated into national lore. He strove to write, in so doing he filled the American Songbook with pop standards that sound as folk songs, timeless and anonymous, as if they always existed. Berlin's most famous song, and by far the most valuable copyright in his, or anyone's catalog is "White Christmas." It is the biggest pop tune of all time, the top selling and most frequently recorded song, the "hit of hits." Sales of "White Christmas" records have topped 125 million copies. Berlin knew the song was destined to be a classic, even as he was writing it. Timing was perfect, the world was headed toward conflict with Nazi Germany, and a post Depression nostalgia for the old days was the mood.. One January morning in 1940, Berlin arrived at his office, grabbed his musical secretary and said "I want you to take down a song I wrote over the weekend," he added "not only is it the best song I ever wrote, it's the best song anybody ever wrote." The rest is history! Prior to "White Christmas" holiday songs were relegated to the sound of religion, not popular culture. Berlins song virtually created the modern Christmas holiday that is celebrated the world over to this day. ~by Jody Rosen
The song White Christmas is undoubtedly the most famous and popular of all the Christmas songs. The music and lyrics for White Christmas were written by Irving Berlin in 1940 and originally featured in the movie Holiday Inn starring Bing Crosby. The lyrics of White Christmas struck a chord with the soldiers fighting in the Second World War and their families who were waiting for them back home. The song and recording of White Christmas by Bing Crosby with John Scott Trotter's orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers was so popular that it was later reprised in the movie called after its name - White Christmas. The film White Christmas once again starred Bing Crosby together with Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen.
