The Ali'is Award Winning Record had Hoku written all over it. 1982 Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts NA HOKU HANOHANO AWARD WINNER: Contemporary Album of the Year AND Single of the Year - You Are the Best of My Life.
With Danny's debut with the Hawaiian group "The Aliis" in 1979 he helped the legendary group reinvent itself as a major local pop act as the featured singer/drummer of the successful group. "The Alii's" with Frank Day as their producer won two "Hoku Awards" in 1982 for Contemporary Album of the Year '82 along with The Single of the Year; You are the Best of My Life. The Album "The Aliis" sold more than 2.5 million copies and earned the young members of this Hawaiian group, a Gold Record. Each member was a musician as well as adding harmonizing vocals.
The members as pictured above being: Danny Couch was seen seated behind the drum set, his first love, as well as lead singer. (to this day Danny is renown for his refined voice and self-taught instrumental excellence, especially with percussion). Bobby King on bass (still doing so to date, and right along side, accompanying Danny at his performances). Carlos Barboza played keyboards as well as percussion. (performs still in Waikiki). Benny Chong lead guitar (now renown as an award winning, master ukulele performer). Joe Mundo on keyboard (performing to date in the Seattle region). Danny sings lead on 7 of the 10 songs recorded on the All'is hit album. 6 of those singles became #1 hits all gold, he told me "if one more had made #1 they would have received a Platinum Record".
This combination kicked off Danny's career as a solo artist shortly after joining the group, "the end of ’79 through to the early part of ’83." Danny left the band to record his first solo album in 1983 "Here Are My Songs". This album sold over 2.0 million copies.
The following photos were taken in Warriors while Danny opened the sealed copy of his album "The Aliis"(pictured above) and then autographed this special copy for me. Click thumbnails for larger photos

Sorry so dark
First Photos in the slideshow were taken for a report on the Hawaiian group during their visit to Lina's high school Kapaa High School 2-10-82. Her first meeting with "The Ali'is"
Performance Photos with "The Ali'is" were taken at the Kauai Resort Hotel where the group performed numerous times. Their shows were always an assortment of wonderful musical renditions, amusing parodies and exquisite repertoire. Including the comical "Super Freak" section staring Danny Couch. The last photo is taken of The New Ali'is, after Danny had departed on his Solo Career.
Lina became the vice president of Danny's first fan club, “Friends of Danny Couch”, Lovelyn was her schools representative. "Danny’s solo concert debut on September 23, 1983, was a pinnacle moment for Danny as well as for his fans. While sharing the stage with fellow entertainers Malani Bilyeu and The Kasuals, he demonstrated his versatility performing a few of the latest tunes, touching ballads, good ole’ rock ‘n’ roll and much more!"
Danny's Cd "Then and Now" has enabled us to take a virtual trip down memory lane. Perhaps it has instilled a bit of nostalgia in someone. Although not present during Danny's earlier years I feel as if I had been there through his music, photos and stories. AND due to the contributions of Lina and Lovelyn.

The word 'Nostalgia' comes from a combination
of two ancient Greek words: 'nostos' ("homecoming") and 'algos' ("pain") and is
a term suggesting a longing for a lost era.
It springs from the heart rather than the mind, and confines itself to living
memory. Once there was a time to set aside childish things, to shut them away in
the box of memory and get on with life's journey. But our childish things are no
longer easily set aside. nos-tal-gi-a n.
1. A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.
2. The condition of being homesick; homesickness.
We can't relive those memories but having them brought back on a CD is pretty close, Thanks to the CD Then and Now we can all be a part of Danny's musical past ~ Mahalo for this Danny, you've touched many.
Ever wonder what ever became of the member of The Ali'is? Go to the next page for some answers.
Please sign the guestbook Danny would love to read it!
May the spirit be with you each day and bring you special memories. The Aloha Spirit!
